This thread just redefined my life. The materials mentioned alone reshape my perspective. Bbl, making hammers.

Maybe this is an option for the rubber head.

It's cheap, and available at the metal shop.

Hey guys, sorry to resurrect this thread, but just adding my .02 - Ive found a wooden spoon works quite well, though does look a tad odd in the tool bag.

But imo, the pictured home-grown example up top does look the nuts, and looking around these threads, I think it's time to get the drill press set-up again :D.
If your hammer wont fix it... It's time for a bigger hammer...

Here is a quick and cheap and very easy way to make a quite efficient "Bump Hammer"

Supplies + Cost

1.) Rubber Stopper (RS-8 (Ace Hardware)) $0.85
2.) Hack Saw blade (Flex Type) $1.29 (They all flex/bend, but the ones that say FLEX on them, won't snap on you)

3.) Electrical Tape + Rag/Cloth $1-2 (if you don't already have it laying around.

4.) Small screw.

Hammer is used with bump keys. You don´t want to use normal hammer because it is too heavy and destructive for the job.

I used to use a block of wood to bump locks. Then progressed to a mix of what has been mentioned on this thread, a steel rule with a door stopper bolted through one end. I have only ever bumped locks in the workshop and never had the need to use them on the road but recently bought a "real" bump hammer and am yet to try it out. It looks and feels very similer to my rule and door stopper which used to work quite well. I'll let you all know my verdict once I have tested them on a variety of locks.
