UPVC Door Adjustments

Postby hai123 » Mon Nov 07, 2011 8:55 pm

Hi,

What does everyone use to cut UPVC when fitting a new multipoint lock into a door with a discontinued lock? ( i.e the hooks are at different centers ). I use a hacksaw blade held in my hand and occasionally can get the dremmel in.

Was wondering if anyone has got any easier or different methods and tools they use as i seem to be doing a lot of these lately?

I use a drill and sharp chisel. A well sharpened chisel will make very short work of UPVC and won't shower swarf around the place like a dremel or hacksaw.

I mark out the area and use aload of 1/8" holes then junior hacksaw the bits in between then file smooth
Dont like using those rotating cutter bits as they tend to chew the plastic up

The other useful tool is an oscilating cutter,Bosh,Draper and Makita all do one.The blades are changable for different applications.
Makes aukward cutting very easy.

This is not a problem I have really run into more than once, but I can't recommend the tools that penguin mentioned highly enough.

I have a Fein Multimaster 250, and it is the perfect tool for this job - and a good number of other inconvenient cutting jobs lock related and not.

The best part is, if you are clumsy, it is extremely difficult to cut yourself with. The oscillating drive allows the blade to cut through wood or metal or plastic, but then if you accidentally go into your skin, it wont break the skin. (don't try this at home?)
