Chubb and Yale Problems

Postby Obsidian » Fri Apr 29, 2005 11:31 pm

Hello All, I've been reading the forum for a while now but have only recently joined. This site is a great resorce :D you should all be proud 8) . I've been a hobby picker for a few years now and have picked quite a few diffrent padlocks, cylinder locks, UPVC door cylinders and a few combination locks ( Dial and Disc combinations ) in my time but nothing much with secrity pins.

I recently purchased a Chubb Shackle Padlock and a Yale X5 6 pin cylinder of eBay to try something a bit more difficult but I'm have problems, I don't no wether I'm using to much tension on the Chubb lock which has serrated pins ( you can just make them out from the photo ) because I find it very hard to push the pins down, they seem to bind very easily, and if I don't use much tension then the pins don't seem to set at all, where am I going wrong ?

I'm having simlar problems with the Yale X5 which must have spool or mushroom pins as i can't see any serrated pins. I mounted the Yale lock to a Practice board ( the X5 is the one in the middle at the top ) I made which is also pictured, I know I've put some very hard locks on the board but i thought if I can pick every lock on the board ( possibly not the chubb mortice or the digital combination ), I'll be finaly getting some where with these locks with secrity pins.

The Tools at my disposal are a Southord Mpxs-20, I've mainly been using the hook, half diamond and snake picks on these locks but no joy as of yet, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I'm not sure I know how to insert photo's  apologies if I've done it wrong.

Hi Obsidian

You will struggle like hell with the Yale X5, very tricky pick you are unlikely to achieve with hand picks. Don't know much about the padlock though sorry. Nice practise board by the way but what the hell happened to the mortise lock !

The mortice lock on the practice board is a chubb my boss used on his warehouse it's just a bit worn, I do Have a Key for that and it's in good working order, Haven't got a clue where to start with that, I'll leave that for another day.

What type of pick do you suggest on the Yale X5.

you could try the hpc electric pick gun but could still struggle and may not wish to spend the money on one.

I want to pick the locks by hand if possible, It's much more satisfying when a tricky one finally yields.
