i sort of understand the principle of lifting the levers but how do you actually slide the bolt back

again , clearly search this section, and you will find what you seek, but in short , if a non curtain lock with an L shape wire , if a curtain lock then by turning the curtain.

search , then study a lock , and all will become clear.
