mistake

hi,
did a job this morning mortice lock on a back door wont open, so i get there and had a QUICK look through the keyhole i say to myself its an old era invincable red case with oval cutout round the keyway, so i drilled with the measurements for the era ( had to drill as the lock was knackered, couldnt open it with the key) drilled it looked in to get to the levers but something wasnt right anyways got the lock open and when i took it out it turned out to be an old avocet red case with u shaped cut out only round the top not all the way round like the era.
moral of story dont take a quick look get the torch out and make sure, this job could have turned out to be a nightmare!
turns out that the problem with the lock was that the bolt tail had snapped off

i have not seen an avocet i take it the keys are similiar otherwise you could have identified the lock by the key?

no i couldnt identify the lock by the key as it was a copy just a plain silver key.

Good ID point for the Avocet is the flared keyhole - wider at bottom.

hi,
rockford this didnt have a flared keyway at the bottom, i took the lock home and removed 2 screws that were holding the hardplate on, the hardplate slides on and off over the lock like a kind of sleeve, then you have to remove 3 more screws to take the lock case off.

union make a red case to - as for the lock you speak of i have never seen it before could you post some pic's as it would be nice to look at in case i come across one over here - you never know!
