Postby bpc293 » Thu Aug 10, 2006 8:40 am

i just` bought 20 double cylinder dead bolts and 20 single cylinder dead bolts. there shclage and i paid like $6.00 for each one with shipping. what would i charge people to install them. if the door is alredy drilled or if i have to drill it. i want to be on the lower end of the price range.

Hmm, 6.00, plus we'll say 3.00 shipping (high, but whatever)=$9.00

So $9.00 should be the total cost of the hardware, provided that the Bolt, screws, etc came with.

If you have to install it in a predrilled hole, it would probabley take 20 minutes MAX (leaving time for fitting a new strike, whatever)

So, I'd charge 20 bucks, that seems like a nice even number which people like.

20-9=11.00 for 20 mins, not bad.

If you had to drill a hole, it would take you longer, say 45 minutes MAX depending on the door.

So I would say 30 bucks would be fair.

These are just my ideas, i have never done this as a job, but I have replaced deadbolts at rental properties and my grandmothers.

i am just curious why no locksmith replied at all. is it because I'm inexperienced and you don't like to see inexperienced people running around out there. or is it no one likes talking about there income. I'm not trying to be rude or demand and answer like i have seen posted many of time. i would really like to know your opinions. was what i asked inappropriate. I'm going to leave smiley faces so you don't take this the wrong way lol. :) :D

If they are brand new around $60-$80 to fit them regardless if the hole has to be drilled or not,

Add 60% to your cost price on the locks and if its around the same price as they are from your local shops then go with that,

pick up the yellow pages and call the other local shops

ask for a quote to swap out a deadbolt.

then you will get a feel for the average pricing in your area

Here it seems people charge $15 to $30 / hour, 2 hour minimum... so $30 to $60 for the service call. Then $7.50 to $15 to fit and/or rekey the lock. I know others will charge even more than that.

At least 70$ each installed. You need to get paid for a skill you have not just the time it takes you to do it. I understand you don't want to start a business but what happens when you get here and there is one-way screws or the hole is drilled wrong and out of alignment or the door is mushroomed in. You may be spending a little more time than you think on some. It is always better to lower your price 10$ or so when your done quicker than you though than have to raise it after you told them it would be a certain price.

You should really start a new thread with a question like that, but I'll answer your original one.

New deadbolts (if they are new ones you purchased and are complete) generally cost around the $20-30 mark for standard residential ones. Add to that your cost of labor (30-40) and travel if any.

Does that help? Also, if there are extras involved on site, such as extra keys, or rekeying other locks to match your deadbolt, then that should be extra as well.
*insert witty comment here*

Don't forget, that as a business, you get taxed six ways to Sunday. Consider the 6% to 12%(!) that your local city taxes you GROSS, and then federal and possibly state taxes. I still haven't figured out the taxing system for businesses, but I do know that I need to start putting MUCH MORE into my savings account.

As most people have stated, you should be charging no less than $60 to simply screw a lock into a hole. You're in the Big Apple, and the cost of living aint cheap. I imagine most locksmiths in your area charge from $80 to $120 for such a thing.
