Weighted tension wrench ...Is it a good training tool?

Postby pickmonger » Sat Feb 07, 2004 7:49 pm

I heard about a training technique and wonder what drawbacks it has.

I suspect it will only work with raking and not with actually picking the lock, pin by pin.

I heard the conversation in french, and my french is not that good, but this is is the general idea ........

Beginner pickers have to learn both pick-technique and how to use a tension wrench. Without the correct tension and at the same time good pick technique the lock won't open.

A weighted tension wrench was used to do half the work. An unaltered 5 pin deadbolt lock was used.

At first the trainer preset the weight to provide the best tension. The trainees were able to concentrate on working the pins with a pick and not worrying about the tension.

With the pins in the correct position, trainees were rewarded with the lock opening by its self. (The weighted wrench turned the plug)

Later the trainees learned how to set the tension themselves and try different locks.

I don't know about these tools. But I play with the torque so much I do not see a set and forget torque being good for my needs. I think if you are picking for a hobby torque is just as important to learn as the picking and if you are not prepared to sit down and learn then find a hobby that does not require as much patients. But I am harsh and I can see how some people would resort to this. As I said above, I just do not think it is suited to my picking style.
Consider me inactive or lurker.

I seen a different weighted tension wrench online and tryed it to see if it worked and it did! on a dead bolt single pin picking .just add a small fishing weight to a normal tension wrench ; I also used it to help teach my wife how to pick :D

Tens of thousands of people (made up number) have learned both at once. I'm not sure why you'd want to make it a two-step process instead of a one; it isn't that hard as it is.
