Problem with picking

Postby emadness » Fri May 25, 2012 3:35 pm

I recently put a new a lock on my bedroom, and my girlfriend locked the keys in.... It's a MasterLock and it has a knob. I just bought a set of picks and tried picking it (I'm not experienced in picking) and I managed to get the cylindrical-thing-that-turns-with-the-key to turn (clockwise), but not the knob itself. Needless to say, it didn't unlock. What am I doing wrong? Am I turning it in the wrong direction?

That sounds exactlyy like what the issue is. If the plug turns but it is not unlocking the lock, then you need to either try and pick it again, but apply tension in the other direction. Just remember this one peice of advice, if you believe that you either can or can't pick a lock, you are right.
Aim for the impossible, because there is no challenge in trying when something is known that it can be done

If it's a regular door knob you can try a plug spinner. I'm sure some of the more experienced members can confirm or correct, but there are a few kwiksets and brinks's I had starting out that I could only pick in one direction. I can get them both ways now, but one way is definitely harder. If you don't have one, I've seen a few people improvise using a flat head screwdriver by "snapping" their fingers. If that doesn't work it might be time to call in the pros.

yeah i got it open. i was turning it the wrong way. but it was because a youtube video was saying "step 2 is figure out which way the key is supposed to turn, you can can which direction gives more way" so i figured if it turns more in one direction that's the direction to turn, but it clearly is not. thanks for the replies
