Is it possible to rekey a car lock?

Postby Puzzles101 » Fri Jun 29, 2012 4:51 am

My truck was recently stolen and recovered. I now have to buy both driver and passenger door locks, tailgate lock and ignition for my truck. I would hate to need 4 different keys for my truck (2001 Ford F-250, no chip in key). Is there any way to rekey the doors and tailgate to match the new ignition? I have been picking for some time now and can repin a regular bolt lock and was wondering if something automotive would be left to professionals or is it something I could do by buying a pin kit?

Yes it is possible and the Ford is easy. However I think your truck has a transponder. I don't have my book in front of me but unless it was a fleet vehicle that year should be a 8 cut transponder.

Best bet is pull all your locks and cart them off to a locksmith and let him rekey the whole set.

You could buy a pinning kit but they list around $230.

We rekey vehicles all the time. It's very simple and if you pull the locks it should be less than $50 per cylinder I would think.

Most any shop that does automotive work should have the correct pin kit for these. It is one of the most popular on the market.

Transponders were optional in 2001.

Thanks guys. I'm going to wait to get these locks in and take it from there.
