Would it be safe to say that if you put spool pins for every driver pin then the lock might have trouble functioning? Is that why when you have spool pins, there is always at least one pin who is shaped normally, or at least serrated (which is more normally shaped then spool)..

I belive so, yes, with all 5 or so spools the lock would turn slightly as soon as it was moved at all, such as inserting the key. I also think that it may make the lock easier to pick. You would instantly know where the spools were and they may just bind like normal pins. Simply further from the upright.

I have always been told that the first driver must be a standard. But I have seen usuage of driffent looking spools like in abus's that hae only a small bore around the top and bottom to have all spools in the lock.

Then again i have seen standard drivers and serrated or spool key pins to take the place of a security driver.

I guess it's more application based than anything.

There is no need for a "standard" pick stock in a lock.

I've bought several locks with security pins in every chamber. I've got 3 Brinks locks with all 6 spool/serrated top pins and all 6 serrated bottom pins and they work like butter. I've also bought Master locks and standalone Master cylinders that came with all 5 tops spooled.

For anyone that's interested, they are Brinks Series 527 and Master No. 911.

I think the Master #911 and #930 are both easier to pick with 5 spools than they are with a mix. Just to prove it to myself, I repinned both simply changing a few of the spools out for normal pins. Much harder to pick when I did that.

I just got 2 new padlocks, Masterlock 142 and Brinks 101-40001. Haven't taken any of them apart yet, both say they have security pins (spools on the Brinks, not sure about the Masterlock). I've been able to get both of them open with a single rake quite a few times already.
