Kasmd73 wrote:Anyone have advice? I've been working on Master lock 140 for a few weeks and just can't get it. I have picked other security pin locks but can't seem to do this. Tried ultra light pressure, alternating pressure, single pin picking, raking, lifting all pins and then raking, vibration, different picks, alternating sequence of picked pins. I can always get it to false set, I try to decrease the torque, but I just lose the set of other pins regardless of how careful I am.

I have a keyed-alike pair of 131's and had the same problem at first. It seems the plug has a pretty extreme false set on almost every pin. I don't get any counter-rotation with other pins once I false-set one, no matter how much I ease up the tension.

My solution is literally to haphazardly swipe at all 4 pins with a hook, not trying to push them all the shear but just to get them started, while applying light tension. Too much tension and you'll lock up in false. After 20 seconds or so, I can usually get them to pop this way.

I know, not a very polished pick attack, but it works. I save my polished attacks for 5200's. 8)

Apparently, Master Lock Co. is releasing a "new" line of padlocks. I picked up one of the Magnum series today at Home Depot for about six bucks; four pins and nothing really secure. Picked it open in less than ten seconds as soon as I was out of the store. Interesting design, but zero security beyond being weird-looking and hard to cut.
There is no means by which I can be removed from the love of God. For this, I am indescribably glad.

Guess Master Lock Co. is not really spending money on new lock production line( these new locks are cheap to buy after all)...other wise the 4 pins should be changed more secure.

Ah, so glad to of found this! I tried looking on Masterlock's website so I could see if my lock had any security pins, but their specs. are rather confusing and never seemed to just explicitly state anything I was looking for. This should hopefully be very useful in the future, thank you! :D

I noticed that the Masterlock 150 wasn't listed here. It's a brass padlock with 5 pins, 1st and 3rd are Spools.

That might be so in your lock, but usually not in every lock.

Here's a great video of how the locks are made and pinned up. The machine dumps pins into the lock "at random" and a key cutter makes matching keys to that pin combination..

The pinning starts at 2:44 of this video, but the entire video is useful to watch.

I found it interesting that they pin cylinders in batches of the same bitting. Seems insecure to me, but so does the rest of the lock. Also it should be stated that the description in the video says "The ball berrings to hold the latch allow the shackle to be Shimmed." Which is incorrect.

im new at this but i got a master lock 130 i think, kinda hard to pick but i could.
the plug came out of it so i took it apart out of curiosity.
i found three spool pins lost 1 pin an assume it was spool
5 pins altogether.
this is a small lock and if master locks are putting in multiple
spool pins in small locks it may give you an idea what to look out for.
thanx

I picked up a #5 today.

pins - 4
security - no

At least that how I understand it. I'm still quite new. Sorry if this is redundant.

A new one for the list.

Yeah. I just picked one of those the other day. Was painfully easy.

Response to Squelchtone/ random pin drop

Postby atticRR » Tue Jul 03, 2012 1:43 am

I got burnt on my Master 220. Lost the pin drop lotto, not one security pin. Normally i would have just returned the lock and hopefully got A better one but this one is a no go because i screwed it up all sorts of different ways.
