How do you re-key an American 700

Postby New York Novice » Tue Jul 27, 2004 6:24 am

A friend gave me an American 700 padlock to play with, I know I'm not up to picking it yet but I would like to see what serrated and mushroom pins look like up close. I've read that these locks are re-keyable and imagine that it has something to do with the 3 torx screws on the back and the one inside the lock. Any help will be great.

thanks
Mike

The screws on the back are to take off the shackle, not for rekeying.

To take the cyl out open the lock and unscrew the philips(?) screw
inside the shackle hole. That will let the guard plate come off and the
cyl will come right out.

Now put the cyl in your hand UPSIDE DOWN and turn the key to
the six o clock position, and now you can remove the bottom pins
one by one and look at them. If you want to remove the top pins
you need a follower tool like with a normal cylinder.

Hope this helps
