I wonder if the revelations will serve to reduce the price or perceived value of Medeco in the marketplace.

When a product is designed by engineers, they cannot always foresee all possible failures or forms of attack, especially when talking about locks. This doesn't however mean that Medeco makes a physically cheap product. Their process, R&D, parts, metal stock, machine tools, all cost money, and I'm pretty sure pound for pound there's more metal and better machined metal in a Medeco than in a Schlage.

So although I see your point in this book driving their price down from lets say $200 per deadbolt down to $150, it probably won't happen since all the way from their machine shop down to the Medeco locksmith down the street, there is an established price all the way down to the customer level.

I could however see once the book is out for a month or two and some TV station runs a report on it, Medeco's stock market shares might drop for a couple months until fixes are released and important locks retrofitted. I have a dealer purchased and registered Medeco at my house, but I doubt my locksmith will be calling me any time soon as compared to him calling the local Nuclear Power Plant or Police Station that uses Medeco locks he installed.

But I'll patiently wait for my packet of 12 ARX bottom pins.

Honestly, I don't see much of this happening. It's really very interesting from a lock enthusiast's point of view, but the expected effect on the market seems to be a bit overrated.

mh might have a point. I would say that Medeco's marketing/damage control will reach more people/customers than Marc's book and interview. It does come down to numbers at the end of the day and unless there is national/worldwide news coverage of the findings, there probably won't be much impact. OTOH, if there is mass media coverage, Medeco may try to sue MWT for loss of business. Tricky case since he's only reporting his scientific findings. You can't sue someone for telling the truth, but in the twisted world of law, I could be wrong

I was lucky enough to pick up a copy of this recently.

For the record, ARX pins don't solve the entire problem the lock is still easy to compromise. If you use Medeco to secure anything important, it is time to look in the emergency budget for some new locks.

It is a great book. Well written, and with great pictures. I saw the presentation, and my jaw dropped. Then I read the book, and I was speechless. The authors did a fantastic job on this, they left no stone unturned.

I highly recommend this book for the serious hobbyist. Especially anyone that has spent the time to take Medeco apart and putting them back together again.
