Forgot to mention a couple more details:

1) you can see circular marks on the edge of the lock body that the pins are below. I'm not sure how these are made, but I wonder if I poked that pin against a weak spot in the metal.

2) types of pick attacks I've been successful with:
Bogota 3-arch
HPC thin S or snake rake
(jiggling with light-to-medium tension)

I have the same lock and it took me a long time to SPP the first time, and even longer to be able to consistently pick it but, I think my biggest impairment to the process was that when it frustrated me I would just hit the bypass and throw it in the done pile and move on to the next one from the to~do~pile(yeah I know cheating but...). Impressed me for a sub $2 wally special.

Again, all the pins in the one that fell apart are standard pins -- NO security pins, despite claim on the packaging.

The replacement I got will rake open in about 2-3 swipes every time. I've SPP'd it too, but it's so tempting to just rake it -- even after setting a few pins.

You can definitely see the circular marks on the sides of the lock.

I just bought one of these too, and I have successfully SPPed it a few times now, but I was surprised to see here that it has secruty pins. I've never picked anything before with security pins, and found this a little more difficult than usual, but not that bad. The number I have on the box i bought the lock in is 161-40001. is this the same lock? it does say high security and it's a brinks brass padlock.

I have the same lock from wallxxxx (insert profanity) and it also fell apart in the same manner as previously described with light standard ssp methods. The lock i have 2"50mm 661-50001 "Max security" contains no spool or serated pins whatsoever. The lock is less than 6hours new and i successfully picked it multiple times with little effort leisurely sitting on the couch i do not recommend this lock to anyone. I am a beginner and found it easy not quite as easy as master #3#5 but not much more difficult. Better off putting your cash towards a quality lock.

Hey,
I'm new to lock picking and i went to Walmart looking for a padlock to start out on, of course i picked this one . after about 30 min of trying i gave up! i went and to a master lock and did that no problem.... this led me to wonder, is the short hook the best for this job? Also how much pressure should i apply with the short hook to each of the pins to set them?
