Keymark X4

Postby gswimfrk » Wed Jul 04, 2012 4:17 pm

Hello everyone!!!

I was curious the other day about my Keymark X4's I installed last year... I was trying to figure out if they were either grade 1 or 2 (the core that is) I know most of the medeco cylinders are grade 1 but idk about the Keymarks x4's. The medeco site is so much more confusing now they are offering grade 2 locks. WTF?

Thanks!

Start worrying when they sell Grade 3.

The lock grading in the US can be a bit confusing. You can have a Grade 1 lock with Grade 2 security as they have distinct grading for durability and security. For example a Grade 1 mortise lock or swing bolt with a Grade 2 cylinder. You might have a Grade 1 lever lock with an ordinary cylinder. Likewise you could pop a Medeco cylinder in a Grade 2 lock.

I am curious if a Grade 1 cylinder has to meet both Grade 1 security as well as Grade 1 durability or are cylinders simply rated on security whilst the locks are rates solely on durability.

Oh my. I have no idea about the grading. I knew about the grade 1 durability, however, no idea on the security grade rating.

My keymarks x4 are holding up quite well, I love the keys. (Super solid nickel silver/something else alloy) I will post some pics if I can get the forum to accept the pictures, I have no idea how to downgrade the quality...the lowest does not even work.

I hope someone can explain the durability v.s. security of the BHMA grading system.

Thanks!

I think you will have to upload the pics to another host like photobucket and then link them here.

Under the BHMA/ANSI 156.50 standard there is cycle testing, some security testing, and other use and performance testing. There is a 10 minute pick resistance test in this standard and a strength test against plug pulling and torquing. But this is really just a durability and usage standard.

The BHMA/ANSI 156.30 is the real security standard, and has Levels A,B,& C, so as not to be confused with the Grades 1,2,& 3 of the 156.50 standard.

I have never seen any statement about the actual Grade of the Keymark locks, but I would guess it would be Grade 1 for general durability and usage testing. Comparing the Keymark cylinders against other cylinders, I know are Grade 1, it appears to be manufactured just as well as those locks and even as well as the Biaxial and M3 cylinders.

I do know that the Keymark's entire model is based around "Key Control" and a package that will retrofit other SFIC. Also the Keymark does not meet UL 437 or BHMA/ANSI 156.30.
