First Deadbolt Question

Hi,

I just started lockpicking, and recently purchased a Defiant deadbolt from Home Depot. Up until today I've just been practicing on a Masterlock #3, but I decided to move on to the Defiant.

My question is if I can just take the cylinder and pick that or if I should assemble the pieces as if it were installed in a lock. It seems to me as if just the cylinder would work, but I haven't yet successfully picked the Defiant yet, so I was wondering if not having the lock fully assembled was a factor.

No it does not matter if it's installed, The lock cylinder will pick if it is installed or not. I have read that some Defiant deadbolts have security pin in them so you might just be dealing with them. Enjoy

I would recommend actually installing the lock if you can, so you can get a better feel for picking installed locks without having to use one thats in use. I have heard that defiant is like the slower cousin to kwikset.

wow, i didnt know you can make a lock sloppier than a kwikset! having the lock installed definately makes for a more realistic application of picking. Real world i guess is what it is. I find that its more difficult for me to pick on mounted locks- which is a great reason to do so. once i have a proper work area i will definately have a mounting station though. If the deadbolt you you purchased is doulble keyed maybe you can mount half and have the other half free to fiddle with, that way you have options.
