An apprenticeship will teach you the trade and get you licensed, you can get yourself licensed with no skill i beleive but to then start a business with no training is foolish and damageing to your customers.

I think an apprenticeship would be a good find as they are few and far between if you know of one going jump at the chance otherwise do some training, get licensed and practise like mad whilst building up you tools and stock supplies.

Dont go down the route of getting licesenced and learning on the job as it wont work.

Read this site from front to back, every thread no matter how boring, it will take a while but your knowledge will increase every day then take a reccomended training course to learn locksmithing i beleive the fowley belshaw postal course is quite good but have a look on the relevant threads o which ones to look at.

You're from Lockport IL, heh, fitting place to become a locksmith. :) However, Illinois is the only state with strict regulations on locksmithing. You have to become tested and licensed by an Illinois board that regulates everything from security guards to locksmiths. Zeke would have more knowledge in this area than I do as I fled Illinois 2 years ago and now hail from New Mexico. :D

If you do a Search on Illinois, you will find a host of information and similar posts on this matter.
You are in a maze of twisting little passages, all different.
