Abus 180 Bypass

Found this bypass yesterday while trying to decode this lock. I still haven't managed to decode it (although i'm thinking now that it's open that i should be able to do something by putting pressure on the combo change clutch thing and messing with the wheels, if i figure that out i'll post that too)

This lock doesn't seem to be vulnerable to the same methods of decoding as sesamee or master 175. The packaging touts it's high manipulation resistance.


To open the lock you must first enter the correct combination, then push down on the shackle. It will then spring open. I'm using a 180 marine, if anybody has other 180's to test on let us know if it works.


First off, here's the lock





Step 1 is to insert something very thin, no wider than about 1/8", and at least an inch and a half long (preferably about 3 inches at least). I'm using a weiser shim pick, or so i've heard these things called. Insert it to the upper left of the first number wheel. Angled slightly downwards, it should go right in with no difficulty. It has to go in at least 1", and will not stop at about 1-1/2" which is fine.

Step 2 is to lever the tool so that instead of being angled downwards, it's now straight. You will feel a slight springiness. My hands are painty.

that's how to open a high manipulation resistance 30+ dollar padlock in about a second.

I saw Barry demonstrate this (without giving any explaination, unfortunately) at HOPE '06, I'm glad you detailed it and I'll have to track down shrub's video.

Has anyone made a cutaway of this style of lock to see what's actually happening inside?

aw, i tried a search for abus 180 and found nothing. I thought I was the first :(.

So shrub, do you know of a way to find the combination then?

I didnt bother to be honest, after finding the bypass there didnt seem much point, ill be honest and say its not a abus but a copy that i tried,

I've seen Barry do this too, and Schrub's video. It's also on the DVD called, The Locksmith by Ideal Creations L.C.C.

They use a Master 175 which looks exactly the same. There are two ways to bypass the lock.

The old way,

insert the shim in the third wheel and angled down, press down on the shackle, pull down on the shim, release the shackle and the lock opens.

The new way,

you can use a small hook pick, press the shackle, and insert the pick in any wheel, pivet the hook side ways release the shackle and the lock opens.

I've only viewed the video on the DVD, it appears to be very easy to bypass.

You place the small hook side ways with the tip facing the right and pick it to the right. In this set the third wheel was used. By depressing the shackle it releaves pressure and you just pick it side ways and opens. I tried to do a screen capture but got a black screen. I'm unable to copy any images from the dvd.

There is a lever inside these locks shaped like a fork with the teeth resting on the wheels to the side of the dials. It is pulled against these wheels by a spring. When all the flat spots on the wheels align under the teeth, it allows the fork to drop raising the tail of the lever. The tail of the lever clears the latches allowing the release the shackle.

shrub: i'm pretty sure this is not the same bypass, that one involves pushing the finger inward, and the one i've found is pushing outwards, and over 1 inch deep into the lock.


i'm also quite positive that though the master 175 and abus 180 look identical there are some differences inside. i haven't tried the 175 bypass on the 180, but you definitely can't find the flat spots the same way.

The lock shop down the street sells neither abus 180, or master 170. All they sell is sesamee. How crappy!
