got a link to a company website from the list above, post it!
got some Model names or numbers for some of these, post it!
(Ex: DOM would be IX, or S&G would include the 826, the 831b, and the 833c., American Lock, you'd put 5200, Series 700, etc)

let the information flow, let's see how complete we can make the list!

ps. Thanks to all those on IRC chat who contributed ideas to the list!

Corbin Emhart and TuBar are the only ones I can come up with.

brands models etc

Postby greyman » Fri Jul 20, 2007 6:33 pm

I think it would be helpful to have separate lists for brands and models or make the models a subheading of the brands. Likewise, it's going to be a boring list if you don't separate the ordinary stuff (pin tumbler locks) from the high/higher security stuff. There must be hundreds (thousands?) of companies making pin tumbler stuff that is really of little interest since it's 6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other.

A good place to start such a list from is the Silca catalogues.

Apart from making me jealous about your EVVA Dual, here's some more models to match the brands you have listed:

BiLock QCC
Fichet Monopole new models are called M2B, M2i etc
Fichet 666
Miwa U9, PR
Mul-T-Lock interactive

Also I think ABUS Granit is the name of the padlock not the sidebar mechanism, though I could be wrong. Come to think of it, I don't know what ABUS calls their sidebar mechanism :? (Help mh!)

We should also put who (currently) owns the brands (probably ASSA Abloy or Kaba).

Ok, here's what I would add to the above:

Abloy -- Disklock (not Pro), Exec, Profile, High Profile.
Abus -- EP10, XP1, TSB 5000, XP2, D8, EC 750/850, EC700/800, C73/83/90, Plus, X-Plus
Anker -- 3800, 9700
ASSA -- 600, Twin Pro, Twin 4800, Twin 7000
BAB

DOM -- D, S, RN, ix 10, ix 5, ix 5HT, ix 6KG, ix10 KG, ix6-SR, Saturn, Diamant
Drumm -- Geminy
EVVA -- DPS, DPI, DPX, DPI-6, DPE, ICS, EPS
FCV
FAB -- Variant, Dynamic, Control, 2060, 2024, 2018
GTV
GEGE -- AP2000, AP3000, AP4000, ANS-2, p-Extra
Gera -- 3500, 5600, 5800, 5900, 6500mc, ISR6 mc, ISR6 PSH, 7100
Gerda -- Tytan ZX
Kaba -- 20, Gemini S, Quattro pluS, Penta, Star, Micro, ExperT
Keso -- 1000, 2000, 2000S, 3000, RS10, 2000S Omega, RS10 Omega
LIPS -- Octro, Trivium
Medeco -- BiLevel
Mottura -- Champions 28, 30, 34, 38, 48
Paffenhain -- Integral, KV14, V14, KW14, W14
SEA -- SEA, SEA2, SEA3
Tesa -- TE5, T10, T60, T80, IPS, T12, TX80
Wilka -- 2263, 1800, STR, STR Pro, WZ, W3600, w@
Winkhaus -- AZ, VS, VS6, Titan
Zeiss Ikon/zIkon/ikon -- TK5, SK6, SK7, their variants Sperrwelle, Sperrrippe, Sperrnocken, and Systems WSW/W10 and Verso.

Notes:
- Abloy Smartdisc is, by the way, some sort of Exec+Cliq.
- Biffar is, by the way, a door manufacturer - they don't produce locks. Maybe they sell re-branded ones.
- Pfaffenhain was bought by Abus, so Pfaffenhain and Abus-Pfaffenhain are the same.
- ikon was originally called Zeiss-Ikon, but sice the company got sold to Assa-Abloy, they were named ikon. The logo still has the "z", so some people call ist zikon.

Hope that helps a bit with the European locks :)

The padlock series is called Granit, the locking mechanism is called Abus Plus, also available in Abus Diskus 20, Abus 88,89 and some bike locks.
It usually has 7 Discs (6 in the Diskus), leading to 250000 (30000) possible combinations. For the advanced bike locks there is the newer Abus X-Plus mechanism, which has 8 discs and som nasty extra stuff, with over 1000000 possible combinations.

Have a nice day! :)

Agreed, but where do we draw the line? While Kaba Penta or Keso 2000S/Omega may be high(er) security, they're nothing but "ordinary" pin tumblers. Same goes for many others, e.g. DOM iX *.

Another thing to consider would be if it makes sense to separate locks from locking systems/cylinders (for example, S&G 833 is a lock, but it has a Medeco Biaxial locking cylinder) and concentrate on locking mechanisms or perhaps open two separate threads.

I'm torn. I'd like to have a list of the most popular locksport locks, so when a newbie reads about a Brinks R70, there is a place he can find out about that lock and maybe even see a photograph or two. The 833c would be in that list even though it has a Medeco cylinder.

The other list would just be common and well known (to our community, I dont expect the average home owner to know about Bi Lock) Canada/US/UK/Europe/AUS lock manufacturers, and I bet we can all figure out Top 100 without going much higher than 100. It does get tricky whether I should list Schlage only 1 time and then have sub listings for their SC1 consumer locks, their Everest checkpin line, and the Everest Primus, or the SC Primus, which uses respective keyblanks, but has the Primus side milling sidebar code.

Let's keep the popular locksport padlocks, pin tumbler & disc cylinders, and lever locks AND the big list of manufacturers all in one place for a while until we get more users contributing. Then we can seperate the two lists or use a table format to present it in a user friendly way.

Thanks for your contributions so far, you guys are the best!

That's very helpful bluestar, thank you!

One of the TOOOL competition euro profile cylinders I have has Biffar stamped on the face. I will check the keyway to see if it is Yale or something fancy.

One of the ideas behind this list/guide is to help users here who run into a lock in the wild. If they run into an older Pfaffenhain cylinder, it won't make mention of Abus, but as a corrolary, the NEW Phaffenhain cylinders only say ABUS and maybe the P logo, or you just have to know what they keyway warding looks like to know it is an ABUS-Phaffenhain. And you're right about all the changes with Zikon. I wonder if the list should have the most commonly known name first, then other commonly known names for a lock, or even street names from our community.

And I know I put Yale, but I think Yale & Towne also has a place, which would also include Y&T since many of their older padlocks only list Y&T just like Wilson only uses the WB logo.

phew. lots of typing. :D

I volunteer to modify the original post to link the names and list the products associated with each brand. I figure we'll give it a week or so to accumulate first?

I was hoping you would chime in! I'd like to see this become a sticky, once it is organized and comprehensive enough.

can you clean up the title.. it wouldn't fit the word "models" and I forgot a C in manufaCturers.
would you please make it "Top 100 List of Lock Manufacturers & best known models"

Thank you Schuyler, let's all have a BBQ / TOOOL meeting soon.

You're welcome :) But I don't think they use Yale - Yale is practically nonexistent on the European market. My bet yould be BKS (88 or 31) or DOM (S or RN).

You're right... but we also dont' want this guide get too confusing, do we? ;) How about something like this:

Pfaffenhain -- (all those shiny Pfaffenhain locks)
Abus Pfaffenhain -- see Pfaffenhain
same for Ikon, Burg -> Burg-Waechter etc.
