Good idea?

Hey im new here and im from New Zealand and i was browsing lockpickshop.com and spied the pen pick set and i had an idea..... I could turn a multipen into a pen pick set what do you guys think?

Cool idea, but...

I'd like to see how you could extend out the tool far enough to both clear the pins in the lock and be retracted back into the "pen".

I'm sure there is a way to do this, but you'll have to hack the extension and pen housing to make it work.

Hmmmm........ what if i made the picks removable so i could unscrew the pen and just pull it out... just like refilling the pen

I've thought of a simailar thing, it could be possible but the problem you'd have is feedback. If you've picked a few locks you know how physical feedback is important and i just can't see a good way around this.

well it will be similar to a pen refill.

the lockpick itself will be a similar design to the refill with the hole at the top to fasten it but the handle and pick itself will be flat.
the handle itself would be fine... Just like picking a lock with a hairpin for example. there will be 3 picks and 1 pen refill so if a cop suspects something i can show them its just a normal pen.

Well my obvious question is why you'd have to hide it from the police Let me tell you something. I have a couple of friends in the police service here in the UK and both of them check pens for drugs sometimes when they are suspicious.

Now imagine you are found carrying lockpicks concealed. Carrying them out in the open you could easily claim you are on your way to a friends to practice your hobby, concealed, well thenyou're in a lot of trouble.

Basically if you need to conceal them you're up to no good i think, at least that's the impression it gives. Sorry.

Hmmmmmmm.......... Good point......another idea i have to do with the multipen pick is electro-chemical etching..... if i got a rod the same diameter of the refill i could flatten one end out and cut away the design.
then i could drill a hole the same size as the refill top so it sits in nicely...

I like the idea, but as PickFree said, it will be hard to feel around.

A random cop probably won't walk up to you and be like "Oh hey I think you're up to no good".. Unless he walks up to you while your picking the lock on some else's door (not recommended).

Something like this might also be slightly bulky. You might have to custom make your own casing.

Also, when I pick locks, I usually only use the Hook tool and (of course) the tension tool.
Although, I am not a pro at picking locks (far from it), I have noticed that it is the only necessary tool to actually pick a lock (raking feels like I'm cheating).

a gutted Marks-A-Lot type marker makes a great pocket pick case. Also check out the Lockmaster's Pen Pick Set #LKM212 it's a lot like your second idea for a pen pick set and is what I used to replace my hollowed out marker filled with South Ord picks. It works well, has 8 different picks and is completely inconspicuous. It's handle can diminish feedback but if you have at at least your fingertip on the metal shank of the pick insert it isn't a problem.

I too have looked into this, I managed to get a mechanical pen with the spring still in it and make a clickable pick, but the only problem was that is would shift and more about. So I thought maybe you can go with the magnetic approach and have two magnets in the pen that would catch the pick, kinda like a multi-bit screw driver.

hmmmm good idea thanks 4 that i'll try that out. but the only problem is getting the magnets in the pen and, it will also set of some very sensitive magnetic sensors
