Postby ImGoSu » Mon Aug 23, 2004 2:38 pm

this is wierd.. but i picked my front door in like 5 minutes (my first pick), but ive been working on my garage for hours, the front door lock was with the pins on top, the garage on bottom, i cant seem to get more then 1 or 2 pins down at a time.. can i ask why this is :? (i dont know anything about lock types and am fairly new to picking...)

Oh you mean there are only 1 or two pins that you can push down? and the rest are all locked?

IF so, this si because there (don't know exact term, the other guys know it better than me as far as the official terms go) but basically the tension is locking some of the pins except for a few, once you pick those, you'll hear a click and the other locked ones will be lose and you can pick those, try reading the MIT guide, it helps out a lot.

It's a normal thing, your nto doign anythign wrong witht hem lockign like that, if they still are binding too much.... use less tension, a lot of times there is way too much tension, a friend who told me how to pick for first time he told me the basics, and when I first started he was like "WHAT THE #### ARE YOU TRYING TO DO?! YOU'LL BREAK THE ### THING!!!!!!!!!" you dont want that it can make it so the first few pins after they are solved the other lcoked pins will just jam and you don't wnat that my best advice is to get a crap padlock take out the plug and then you can really visualize everything, and see what your doing and you can also take out pins to make it easier, that's what I did that really got me rolling when I was starting.

I am nto quite sure if you are using too mcuh tension or not, youa re doing fine with some lockign some not, that's fine, but you should be able to pick the "loose" pins and then they will click in and you will have more pins that used to be lose taht you can pick, To be sure you got have set a pin, bounce it to see if it kind of makes a rattleing clicking sound and that will mean it is set, so then your fine, I use a hook for bouncing it's best for that. What pick are you using? A way to know you have to much tension is by raking the pins just one time and seeing how they sound if they dont have that clicking when they fall back down or some of them set, and they just kind of sound liek yoru tapping on them, you have too much tension, and then you can loosen it and rake again, that's a good way, or just bounce a pin and you can ge the tension level.

Ok a few things might be happening here, firstly it might be gunky, as it has pins on the bottom it would collect water and dirt and other crap faster, so give it a lubricant with some dri film lube, good stuff + it cleans really well secondly, if you have the key, look at it, it might be a wafer lock, if so a pin might not work so well on it....thirdly, try using less tension and try picking it in the other direction, and like most lockpickers know, anger doesnt help at all, you can pick any lock when your in a good mood, get pissed off you can barely pick 2 pins :P so go chill, watch some TV, eat icecream whatever, just block it out, then walk over to it and then just go "Oh....hello there lock, I might pick you" and then youll be ok....hopefully, put the key in and open it and feel for anything out of the ordenary
