Brinks "High Security" Brass 5 pin padlock

After taking a few years off from picking locks on a regular basis, Ive been getting back into the swing of things and working on getting my feel back. I stopped by Wal-Hell recently to get something to tinker with and have to say Im getting a little pissed off....
I know this lock has spools and possibly serrated spools. But does anybody know EXACTLY what they put into these locks, so that I know what Im dealing with?
Ive found at least 3 spools and possibly 1 or more serrated pins so far. Im too ham fisted right now to tell for sure what all is in there.

I got one of this padlock and wondering same thing
what EXACTLY they put into these locks
all i know is they have spool pins, but that won't put up a good fight on this lock
i been able to open this lock under 30 seconds.

Spools no problem, serrated pins..... possible problem when picking it dry. I could fill the serrations, but I wouldnt know how many there are etc. There is some info on the board about 3-4 spools, some say all spool top pins, some say serrated spools.....
I know WHAT is in there, I need to know how many of each are in there.

i know the Brinks Max Security Shrouded Padlock got some serrated pins
don't know how many serrated pins, also i been able to pick this lock
with no problem .

Great video! My sense of touch is getting better over the past few days, and Ill be back up to speed soon enough. It just really sucks to have lost something as basic as sensitivity in my fingers.

I have that very lock, and I have not been able to pick it for the life of me. I've even got the Brinks Max Sec shrouded disk opening consistently, but this was one that really challenged me! I haven't opened it yet, but hopefully very soon with the help from that vid!

I have the same problem with the Brinks. I was given the same video as you. It helped in that I was thinking the 2 pin was a spool and thus trapping the pin at the small part. Not ever thinking it was the only normal one. Being new I had never thought it would cause all spools to get trapped. All the other pins are spools. I am certain that 3 is also serated. Not sure about the others. Have picked 2x about ten minutes apart one evening. pins 3-4-5 all give ccw once false set. #1 pin is hard to set if you set it after the others and is the first to become unset if you release tension. The times I picked it I had to give 3 just a little more push right before it opens. I am sure I must be oversetting a pin. Sometimes when tension is released I listen for clicks and here 5. One click is very light. I tried to cut the first one open to get a view of what was happening but killed the lock.

oh man, I'm glad I'm not alone. This thing is a . I picked one up after the holidays to try my new homemade picks on, and for the life of me I can't get it open with SPP. Every once in a while I can rake it open, but so far absolutely ZERO luck SPP. I can feel the spools counter rotate the cylinder, but my tension wrenches don't sit well in the bottom of the keyway and I lose feedback.

I'm going to try and make a tension wrench that will work from the top (everything I have now is way to thin), or possibly made a dual wrench once I figure out a good way to do it.

I can pick spools..... but there are what seems to be serrated spools in this lock. I cant freakin stand serrated pins. I can fill them in, but am still trying to pick it dry. So far no luck, and Im getting more and more aggravated.

These can drive you crazy. At first I would get frustrated but now I having fun with it. I Feel the spools causing ccw and know what they are. My lock though after setting the spool goes back to 12 o'clock but the 2 pin doesn't need to be reset like on the video. I'll get it soon because I'm learning.

Hey Guys,

Just found this thread on a search and thought I'd contribute my findings. I bought this lock from WalMart last week. About a day after I got it home, I was SPP'ing it and felt something pop out in my support/tensor hand. Turns out, I apparently pressed on a pin that was deep in the plug and it actually caused it to bust out a small slug of brass from the body of the lock!

Mind you, I wasn't manhandling it either -- it was just normal, easy pressure on the pins.

Next time I inserted the key, that retaining pin (a really long one) popped through the new hole in the side, and upon withdrawing the key, the plug pulled out of the cylinder, pins went everywhere and springs were hanging out.

So, all that to say...
1) Wow, what a weird weakness -- just jam that last pin and the lock falls apart.
2) While it's billed as a "high security" lock and the back of the package says it has spool pins, my particular lock has ZERO spools. Just standard key and driver pins -- all 5 stacks.

I took it back to WalMart and exchanged. I can jiggle the new one in about 5 seconds consistently. I'm not sure if it has spools or not, since I haven't had time to SPP the new one yet. Will post back once I know more.
