SouthOrd PXS-14 pick set

I just ordered the SouthOrd PXS-14 pick set from lockpickshop.com and was wondering if anyone could tell me how good this set is for a beginner. I'm certain it'll be better than the bobby pins I've been using to open some old padlocks. Sorry if this is the wrong section for this post but I'm new here.

any set it good for beginers. if it has a short hook and a few rakes your in buisness. you can build from there.

Although next time you plan on purchasing something you should run a search on here to see the feedback of the product first.

In this case the South Ord set is a decent set of picks for the price. So you did fine =)

Not only that, always make sure that you're buying the right set depending on if you are left handed or right handed. I can't tell you the amount of new pickers who buy a set of picks and get the wrong one, because they're a lefty.

I'm a righty in the US so that won't be a problem . I tried to find info hear about the set but couldn't actually find any for some reason. But I figured since it was cheaper than the 11 and the 8 piece sets right now, I couldn't go wrong.

And I got the picks in the mail about a week ago now, so far I've only really used the small half diamond and another one that kinda looks like a W, not sure what it's called though lol. I must say, they are a huge improvement over my bobby pins!

We just call that the W rake, S or Snake rake is very much an S shape, the W is a W shape. The W pick will be the first one you break, because it is very thin where the W meets the tang of the pick.

To confuse the matter even more, Southord does call the W shaped on S rake and they call the one that is atually shaped like an S, a C rake. And what they call a W rake looks like an L rake that is taller on one side. Totally wrong in my opinion, but I think these names were made a loong time ago by some locksmith or lock pick maker and they probably had a list A thru Z of different profiles and the names stuck, even if they don't look like the name, or make much sense. Another one I like is the L rake but some places called it a riffle rake. To each his own right?

Thanks! That was rather informative! I did notice that the W rake looks like it'd snap pretty easily unfortunatly. I've tried to use the L rake before and it didn't really work well at all. Maybe it was because I used it on a padlock?
