Is there a list of which lock manufacturer's pins will fit into which other lock manufacturer's locks? Thatis, will the spool pins of an ASUS re-leyable padlock with a KW1 keyway fit into a Kwikset or Weiser lock?
best way to check is to measure the diameter of the pins with a micrometer or a set of calipers. To my knowledge there is no post on it but then again I know they sell universal pinning kits so maybe most can be switched as long as you follow the MACs guidelines.
It's my understanding that most locks use pins with a diameter of 0.115" while some use pins of 0.108" and that the main variation between brands is the length of the pins. I suppose one could be really anal and mix and match all the pins resulting in a non-standard bitting pattern that could not be cut by code. Do a few of those on Kwikset key blanks, let them loose in the wild and there would be a lot of Kwikset SmartKey locks in need of a reset cradle in short order.

Azbe, a Spanish 5-pin euro cylinder. I´ve had this double euro for a couple months but can´t pick it every try, so i "snapped" it expecting to see serrated pins.

@chriswingate: Was that RR Brink cylinder set up for "LCK" (Limited Control Key) meaning the key at the plug can only turn one way because of a pin installed on and projecting from the back of the cylinder in the master ring, or was it standard both keys can rotate in either direction ? ~~ Evan

7 Pin SFIC arrow I just picked up I thought this lock had not been re-keyed when I bought it, but with the spool, on top of the spring, and all the security pins on a lock I thought was supposed to have none, I think someone has rekeyed it. If the mods agree, feel free to delete this post, or atleast make a note on here, seeing as I don't feel a re-keyed lock really fits in this thread. Otherwise, I just wanted to add this

I have enjoyed reading every post from page one to page seven. I have gained a very good understanding of pins and how they work and the telespocic pins for dimple styple locks. I have also taken apart a Progressive commerical grade 2 (which I know is a ftlbs stress test and operating test). To my dismay there where no security pins. So here is my question as I and at a different camp in Afghanistan for a few days and do not have my pick set or secuirty pins to try this out... would this work?
Before inserting the tension wrench would it be feasible to raise the bottoms pins above the shear line with a raking pin insert tension wrench apply pressure and rake the pins downward? where is the flaw in this theory? would this work for no secuirty pins? Why or why not? Thank you everyone

eodjeff, The process you are referring to is called 'reverse picking'. Recently learned the term myself. (Thanks, Femurat) It can work, but is quite a bit trickier than normal picking. It can be used to overcome some styles of security pins. Used it myself to open an ASSA oval lock that used countermilling in the plug. It still took a lot of tries before I succeeded, but it did work on what, for me at least, is a difficult lock. Yet another very good question about thinking outside the box, eojeff. Keep it up and practice, practice, practice, then I think you'll be a really good picker someday. Gordon
Just when you finally think you have learned it all, that is when you learn that you don't know anything yet.
