3D Printing Keys

Recently, I've been working on creating parametric CAD files of keys to be able to generate printable 3D models by just entering the desired key code into the file.

So far, I've got it working with Schlage SC1 keys, but it should be pretty straightforward to port to others.

If it is ok to post links, I have a writeup and source code available.

Does anyone know if there are technical drawings of the keyway shapes used by different keys? I just sort of guesstimated by measuring a couple of keys with calipers and a ruler. It would be much easier to use the real numbers.

The now expired Schlage patents for the C keyway has diagrams, but no actual measurements.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen any good reference source for common keyway dimensions -- at least not to the accuracy that you would be looking for.

That aside, I had a look at your blog and your SCAD file: that's very good work!

The information you are looking for on the exact machining sizes and tolerances for various keyways is going to be a closely guarded trade secret -- you won't find that information anywhere...

Obtain several OEM keyblanks for the locks you wish to add to your system -- measure the blanks for whatever dimensions you need... I am telling you to use OEM blanks for this purpose because different 3rd party blanks can vary quite a lot depending on where they were made...

You will however be able to easily find depth and spacing charts on many kinds of locks available openly -- this would save you from having to measure such information off of keys manually using calipers... A word of caution: do not assume that you have measured the correct numbers for every lock that uses the SC1 keyway... OEM Schlage uses a different system of bitting depths than SC1 cylinders sold by Ilco...

thats a great project i have worked closely in several 3d printing projects... great idea

i would continue to measure the keys or keyways to get ur desired keys, they dont have to be exact they simply have to fit in the keyway... and use depth and space charts to get yoru cuts. you can also look at some cutting wheels to get the angle the cuts are made at, may fill in some of ur blank info.

The keys I have appear to be mostly OEM ones. They are all worn a little, but it seems to be enough to get measurements that work in multiple locks.

I ordered some key gauges to speed up the process of measuring keys.

I'm working on making a KW1 model now.

thats a pretty cool idea! KW1 shouldn't be too difficult since its similar to SC1.

Yep! I uploaded a KW1 model as well. Any household key that doesn't have an overly complex keyway shape should be pretty easy to make a model of, by just putting in the right keyway channels and depth and spacing calculations.

If anyone has specific requests, I can try making other models. Otherwise, I'm probably done with the project for now.

Wafer locks are up next. Schuyler stopped by and we got most of the way though making a working ABUS Plus key. I also have a Kryptonite lock to try.

I made models for ABUS Plus and Kryptonite disc detainer keys. The Kryptonite one doesn't successfully print yet, but the ABUS Plus works about as well as the real key.
