Picks for Australia

Postby claustrum » Tue Dec 28, 2010 9:08 pm

Hey all,

I started lockpicking this one lock last year for ages with a bobby pin and a pen lid metal thingy and I finally picked it last week :P It was the best feeling when it opened. I decided at that moment I was going to take up lockpicking as a hobby and get me some proper picks. I live in Australia and I've been looking at a site (www.lockpickshop.com) to buy picks from but I have no clue which sets would work with Australian locks (Lockwood etc). Ive been searching the net for answers but no luck. I'm wondering if anyone can point me to the right lock pick and answer one other small question. Will the lockpicks get to me through customs if I order them?

Thanks :)

P.s sorry if this threads been done...

I don't know if australian locks are so different.....but I think that if u buy a set containing standard(american)picks plus some euros picks you can pick whatever u want :)

I was thinking of that, but just to give you an idea of the size; it's width is big enough to fit a Bobby pin in with ease and have a teeny tiny gap

therefore I think that the width is pretty much the same of European locks.
Euro-picks will fit well! (I think...)

I use my Southord picks for qork, I do have a HPC set but I find the picks to be too big and a lot harder to move around in the lock. If I were you i would go for the Southord slimline picks, and when you order them get a couple spare of the small and medium hooks as this is what you will most likely be using most for single pin picking. As for the jackknife set, I have this and don't have much use for it. I used to keep in on my key ring so if I had a small cupboard lock or something easy to open I wouldn't have to go back to my van to get my proper pick set. Now I just have a small pickset with all the main picks and jewellers screwdrivers that I may need for a job.

Start off with a brand like Whito locks as these are a bit easier than Lockwood, once you have gotten the feel for it better then move onto Lockwood as the tolerance in these is a lot smaller and makes them harder to pick.

Customs, nowhere have I been able to find that it is illegal to own pickpicks in Australia, it is only illegal to own/ posses break and entry tools. So if you have the picks at home you will be fine.

Thanks. Now I don't have to worry about customs. I've been looking at SO Slimline picks 22 piece sets, is that too many picks for a beginner? I just want enough picks to open window locks, padlocks and back door locks for emergencies (I'm not a burglar :P) plus lockpicking seems like a good skill to know :)

And last 3 questions:
Do the Jack knifes picks fit in Aussie locks ?
Where can I buy whito locks?
And lunchb0x, I'm guessing you're australian?

I'm pretty sure it's the 22pc set that I have, this is the set I would recommend. There are a few picks in there that you wont use but it will be good to have them anyway so you can see how they would work.

The Jack knife set will fit in Australian locks but the screw that holds the pick in place doesn't really hold it tight enough and there is a bit too much movement when picking.

Bunnings I'm pretty sure sell whitco, go for a cheap entrance set and a screen door profile cylinder, should only be ~$60 for the two of them.

And yes I am, up in Darwin.

Are you familiar with using car windscreen wiper spring steel inserts as the perfect size and shape to cut and bend into tension wrenches?

You just separate the rubber wiper from the spring steel by peeling them apart and voila, free metal to make pick tools out of.
