Clearly it is a BEST lock, you cant pick the best (lock in your photo) with the worst (anything from DealExtreme) duh..

Tell us more about that lock and whats behind the door you're trying to get into and then we'll talk more about how a pick gun would work or not work in a BEST lock.

let the games begin,

Ok. that lock was actually a picture of my dorm door lock. in my dorms hallway there are 4 dorms. 3 (including myown) are occupied this semester. The 4th was left empty. I would like to use this for storage. I understand the risks etc. etc. The door has yet to be opened and goes unchecked during the room checks. Thanks.

And are dx pick guns really that bad? I have gotten nothing but quality products from dx in the past. Thanks..

Unfortunately, lp101 is not what you think it may be. We are not here to train criminals or to help people who want to save a buck or two. We pick locks as a hobby and because it is a fun challenge, we do not do it because it is useful in the real world to get free things or access to places where we are not allowed to go. The media already make anyone who says they know how to pick a lock out to be a criminal, and we try hard to minimize that image, because it simply isn't true for 99.9% of us who are on this forum. To that end, we follow some rules and we keep to a strict set of ethics where we dont use our skills to show off to friends by picking their dorms, we dont show off to co workers by picking their desk or office door to fill their office with packing peanuts, and we dont run around the apartment building or our neighborhood picking door locks because its fun and exciting and 'what hard could it possibly be'. Most of us keep a small collection of locks to pick for fun, and when we get bored with them we trade or sell or buy new ones.

If anyone on your floor ever finds out (and people do talk) that you store stuff in a room that you dont have a key to, and campus police or your RA or your Dean finds out you have a pick gun.. man.. after that, if you're still not suspended or expelled, anytime anyone's cell phone, ipod, ipad or $10 dollar bill goes missing from their suite or room, your name will be at the top of the list for suspects. It really isn't worth ruining your image and credibility, because this is the kind of stuff that will follow you to your first job interview after college and its never an easy conversation.

Best bet is to make buddies with the RA, hand him or her $50 and a case of beer and ask if you can store some stuff in there and nag them occasionally to open it for you to get stuff out or put stuff in. <-- This is the best advice you will get for this question.

Will that DX gun work on that door? More than likely, but it may also break the lock by dropping out master wafers. Then even the real key wont be able to open it and they'll have to drill it or [insert something expensive that will probably involve your deposit]

Your call man, we're just trying to keep it real (and legal),

Thanks for the answer. Im not worried about breaking the lock. If it breaks it breaks. It should be covered under the thousands and thousands of dollars i pay every year to go to college. The system is broken, college is expensive as hell to due to free government loans and other broken money wasters put into place by the feds. So if i break a lock or two. I am certainly not that worried about it.

I appreciate your advice and understand that this is not a community of criminals :). I would only do it as a hobby and maybe for some exploration into the empty dorm. Thanks.

Your not worried about it breaking? Then a gun would work fine. May I suggest a 12 gauge with slugs?

As a university instructor, I couldn't agree with you more: education should be cheaper and more widely-accessible. However, that doesn't entitle you to break into rooms and get a free storage locker for your stuff. That's like arguing that your new car is expensive as hell, so you should be entitled to break into your dealer's service garage now and then and use their tools for doing your own car repairs.

Fortunately, we are that worried that morals and responsibilities be part of what we teach.

If the price doesn't work for you, go somewhere else or get a scholarship. We're not here to debate your choice of schools, we're here to pick locks, and we're not here to help you pick locks you don't own. Period.
