My first tool roll. D.I.Myself I just wanted to share a little project I put together one afternoon. We have all seen the tool rolls that people have made. We all know that Storm has a very impressive tool set which can include a beautiful roll. I had some psudo-suede laying around from another project and I sewed (sic) this up in about 3 hours. My sewing skills are still a little weak. Gotta get me some starch… I made it pretty big and sewed(sic) several different size tool slots. This is my first one and I plan on making more. I used this greenish psudo-suede and goldish jeans thread. I think the contrast is pretty nice. Obviously the order of assembly is off as you can see all the thread on the backside. Ill remedy all this on the next one. I have several other sets of tools, files, picks, probes, etc, that will need pouches. If I ever get any good at making these things I might offer custom ones up for sale but right now I would be embarrassed to let someone else see my roll. Thanks for reading. ~Jesse

Pretty nice tool roll, may I ask what specific type of fabric, your using, where you get it, etc?

Now that you ask I can't remember what the fabric is called. Its a greenish fake suede i got from Jo-Ann fabrics. next time im in the area ill stop by and find out. It wasnt very expensive since i didnt know if i would be any good at sewing so i wouldnt have spent much money on it. Thanks for the interest. Ill post more later.

Deception, still havent found out what fabric i used. Hopefully tomorrow.
Sormano, Looks good for your first attempt. One suggestion is go ahead and fold all the fabric over to make everything double ply. your edges will be cleaner. I had that psudo-suede laying around but i am planning on making my file folder out of black duck cloth. That's like canvas. Keep up doing-it-yourself.

Anavaree, thanks man. I specifically like the color of the tool roll, only because I was in the Military, and well... spent quite sometime learning to love the olive drab color.
Both your tool rolls look great, I'm going to have to try and break out the sewing machine and see if I can get one to look as nice as yours.
The pick to the left in the photo I'm pretty sure is either the King/Queen pick, as far as the other one not sure, it looks like it might be a variant of the King/Queen picks. There's some templates around the site, you might want to check there.

I thought they both might be and king and queen. I am usually only seeing them in templates so seeing a home brew threw me off. those are the first 2 picks i will be making.
Deception, I actually like OD Green myself. I have worked with the airforce for years doing SAR so i have my share of OD myself.

I used this template for this set of picks (im planning to make way more....) unfortunally someone managed to break my best pick on his first attempt on picking The lefty is the last one, the other one is a attempt on the one above, didn't fully work out but the pick is working very well so there are probably hundreds of variants wich will be good.

Yeah, really soft but kinda heavy. Suede-like in the front and woven backer. It seems very like a microfiber couch. It is in the clearance bin at my frankfort Jo-Ann and i am headed over there today. Ill get the name of it, assuming you have a jo-anns handy. I have been using Duck Cloth, thats like a canvas, for a gear bag i am working on and I will use that for my next pouch.

The fabric is called VFF Suede. The color I got was limited availability, not like its rare, just they only had the one bolt and aren't getting another any time soon. I am using Coats and Clark extra strong upholstery thread. Everything is 100% polyester so it wont shrink if you have to wash it. I found this material while I was there. Looks a lot like aged leather but still a VFF suede.

Hrm, alright thanks. I'll be on the look out for it then. Perhaps as a replacement do you think that this would work? http://www.opticsplanet.net/mcnett-corp ... owels.htmlI believe I have 1 or 2 laying around, it seems like it might possibly be the same type of material.

Those towels do look close and theyre a really good idea. Already double ply, finished edges and you can probably find them cheap at BedbathBeyond, walmart, etc... Nice looking out.
