Suggestion for a cheap vice?

Postby dirtymoney » Fri Oct 07, 2011 7:56 am

Looking for a simple cheap vice to hold locks as I pick them. I need to start picking as if the lock were mounted & not in my hands like I usually do.

And I am not rich, so a cheap vice is what i need. Suggestions? I would prefer a vacuum mount.

HI, Please fill out your state and country location, this will help us figure out what store to send you to.

If you're in the USA, there is a store called Harbor Freight which has lots of good tools for low prices. I bought a portable suction base vise there for $15 and it's the best thing ever!

Here's my video of it holding a 4 pound military padlock with out any issues: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Xg9ZOIehiU

Here's the website where you can buy it or go find a store near you (looks like price has gone up a dollar or two:

If you prefer the all metal old timey style that you have to attach to a table, here's one at Home Depot for $21

hope this helps, welcome to locksport!

Update: I went & bought this one yesterday...

I would have bought the harbor freight one, but the store was far away AND they were out of stock. I even had an online coupon that would have saved me three bucks, but I wanted one now.

So I stopped by my local Lowes on the way to work & got Bessey for about $23.

I like it.

I have the one from harbour freight and it's pretty nice for lock stuff.

I have 2 from Harbor Freight, the one Squelchtone mentioned and this one:

http://www.harborfreight.com/2-1-2-half ... 97160.html

I bought the one that clamps to the table for impressioning. The suction one is great for picking and portability, but not very good for impressioning. With a 20% off coupon, they are both very affordable.

Good luck,
Ed

For those of you finding this in the UK, this vice from Screwfix is good value:

I can think of a few cheap vices, but most are getting pretty expansive. I mean, look at the cigarette tax.

(Yes, I've spelled it wrong on occasion too.)
