Can I put a new Keyway in an existing Mailbox lock?

Hi, been looking around for a mailbox lock but the one I have is very hard to find.

It has 2 screw holes on the side and a bottom little cam to push the mechanism on the door, and was used in the old mailboxes.

I have the key working and the mailbox piece but need new mounting screws for the lock and wanted either a new keyway or a new cylinder with the aluminum front for the key in the highest security version I can get.

Can anyone direct me to the right parts I would need for such. The only replacement cylinder Ive found that appears to be legitimate is 7835YA-04-KD but with the brass front.

A lot of vendors have told me they don't carry these type of locks or they were discontinued.

Also someone told me the mounting screw I needed was 6-32 3/8" Flat head but I saw by the door to the lock is less than 3/8" so Im not sure what type of screws I need for mounting the lock.

If someone can help me, would be greatly appreciative.

That is the one I saw. But do you know if it can be found with a silverish front instead? If I change it would anyone even bother to notice the different front keying?

I was wondering if that lock could be changed to fit different keyways. Also does 6-32" by 3/8 sound right for the screws I need for the holes to the mailbox door?

I know what the lock looks like and what is available. But do you know if this cylinder is available in other models with different keyways?

And would you trust an ebay seller who isn't a locksmith to purchase this?

I think you're asking a lot out of a cheap post office lock.. its not like a Medeco where you can get 20 different finishes and keyways..

Why do you need a different keyway? usually those things are limited to some variation of Yale Y1 or reverse Y1 or 999 (from what I remember)

They're also usually made of brass, I don't know what you have already.

Are you trying to restore your old mailbox and lock or trying to change the keyway because you think someone has your key or something? Let us know what problem you're trying to solve, we may have a better solution.

And yes, my entire lock collection and even the locks on my front door are from sellers that most people would refer to as 'some guy' on ebay. That guy has 100% feedback, as do I, meaning we never sold something anyone had anything to complain about.

Here's another thread about these locks, it does list a Segal keyway, but that's even easier to pick than the 999R (reverse yale)

Mine is the Same exact cylinder with the exception that instead of the keyhole being brass on the outside, it has the aluminum color. Internal it is all brass.

Mine has a different keyway design than the Yale design and I wanted to know which is the best keyway that I can get on this lock. Just because Yale is better than Segal, how does this keyway compare to the best one I can get? That lock does look like it will fit however.

I looked in the mailroom and all the keys were all silver fronts, not one had a brass colored keyhole piece. They were at one point looking to change the mailboxes but apparently it fell through.

I saw the Salsbury 2290U with Aluminum front but was told it was out of production.

Apparently there are a few OEM's of these locks and I am trying to identify the ones that exist and the best one I can get, then find a qualified seller who I can trust.

The only thing I need to restore on the mailbox is I need replacement mounting screws with the right thread size.

I asked someone who said "The two screws that hold in the lock may be a 6-32 flat head bolt 3/8" or 1/2" long. Any hardware store should have them. The two screws for the rear cam are too short, the wrong thread and size."

Mine doesn't have a bolt and the screw seems like it may be smaller than 3/8" but I have not measured it and I am not sure if the 6-32 thread size is accurate.

You cannot do what you want to do. What is available is all you can buy. If you need shorter screws simply cut them to length.

Not for use as USPS service points for delivery of mail to an addressee...

The same boxes/locks in "private use" and you are talking a different thing...

Does anyone know what screw size are in these USPS Po Box mailbox types? Mine is for private use and won't have the USPS keyway of course.

But I don't know what size screws to get.
