Jamming locks

Postby certified male » Sun Apr 29, 2012 8:15 pm

Will rough picking mess up the pins so the key won't work? This happened to me twice. Thanks.

Most key pins are made of brass, which is a softer metal. Most picks are made out of steel, which is much harder than the brass...so yes, if you're really rough when you pick, you can deform the key pins which may change the height of pin(s). When the key is inserted after rough picking, the sheer line may not be clear to rotate the plug as it would if it were free of defects.

You've already asked this in your other post.. no need to cross post, we all see new posts.

What are you using to pick the locks? a real pick set from Southord or HPC or some home made tools? This could be the reason you're raping the inside of your locks.

if you're sticking picks in and just scraping the pins in and out and up and down like a wild man with a Sawzall, then yeah sometimes you will get lucky and open the lock, but you're also filing away at the brass pins and the material inside will cause a lock to get clogged up and the pins that normally go up and down in their chambers will suddenly become deformed or full of brass shavings and will not work, even with the correct key.

Please watch some youtube videos of people picking locks to see the speed and force being used.

Happy Picking, and stop picking locks that secure your house, that's one of the main rules we follow in this hobby.
