KLOM vs Southord set?

Postby skan » Fri May 04, 2012 7:49 pm

Hello

I'd like to buy a lock pick set (my first one).

I've checked at dealextreme and found a 20 pieces KLOM set that seem OK.

Do you advise me to get it or rather getting a 9 pieces Southord set? (or any small set from a famous brand for the same price)

Is the steel used by KLOM much worse than Southord's?
Will I need all that extra KLOM pieces?
I say Southord but I mean "any not too expensive" good brand.

regards

I would suggest getting a small Peterson pick set i.e. shirt pocket set. My preference are the plastic handles.

But besides Peterson, is Southourd steel much better thatn Klom?, or is just the label?

I've tried to buy the Southord set from an american shop but the shipping costs twice the price of the set.

Where can I get these tools at a good price? (to Spain)

thanks

Now I'm between:
Southord 9 slim pieces 34€
Southord 5 slim pieces 21€
or the HPC Tyro 9 pieces 36€

These Southord sets don't incliude a ket extractor piece
Prices include shipping

Should I take this HPC over Southord?

OK guys,
I've already bought my set, I didn't want to spend more time.
Southord 9 slim pieces from lockpickshop for 26€. I've used the code lp101
I first tried to buy them from southord directly but all codes I found where not working.

thank you for your advises.
I hope they are good and not to forget them in a drawer

Just my opinion.
I think the SouthOrd set has very nice steel and for your first set I would get the southord 9 piece.
I have the MPXS-62, MPXS-32 and the MPXS-8. I still use the picks from those sets. They are also the first picks i let my friends borrow when they want to try picking for the first time.

And speaking of the klom set, I just got the 32 piece set from HawleyLocksuppy.
The set I got was a little bent up, which I think is a common problem with the Klom orders, however, it appears that the steel is very strong and has very high tensile. very ridgid and springy. I am looking forward to picking something with them. I will post up more info about the set when I have some more time.

good luck with your choice and have fun.

You didn't really give us much time to respond, but I'll answer anyway. They're all good sets, but I would rate Klom over SO just because the handles are more comfortable, and Peterson over both because the Peterson handles are just right for me in terms of size and feedback.

Legion,
Since he was asking about the steel quality the handles on the Klom set completly slipped my mind. You are right on about the handles being so nice. Hard but rubbery and large enough to get a good grip on. A great pick to hold. Thanks for mentioning it.

Anyway, I can add some home-made handle or cover but if the steel is bad I can do nothing.

The steel isnt bad, not by any means, i was just saying that the SO steels seems a little higher quality.
I am looking forward to using the Klom picks for a long time.

My new set from KLOM just arrived, here is short review viewtopic.php?f=4&t=55399
They are improving quality and that's good - in new version of the set the case is made of plastic and it is a kind of "picks organizer" (not very comfortable, but much better than previous "leather" case).
