rare and interesting key machine

Thought I would share a photo of this interesting machine I own. It is an Ilco universal code machine with a difference. Can you spot the difference?

I'm not so familiar with those machines, so this may not be the unusual bit... but is that wheel on the front-right used for decoding cut depths?

I think that machine is called a Ilco universal code machine. The discs are changeable for different manufactures ( Schlage Corbin, Kwickset, Sargent, etc.)
Usually the discs are flat ( parallel with the ground ) in this case the discs are vertical. Very different. Is that an earlier model ?
Those machines are GREAT code machines, especially if you dedicate it to 1 manufacturer. They are a bit of a pain to change , ( compared to a HPC 1200)
I have a friend who has a huge selection of parts, spare machines etc. If your interested just PM me.

The odd thing is the second jaw and copy dog. The earliest machines had the two jaws but also had two cutters and would code cut a pair of keys. This one will allow code cutting or copying. You can control the spacing precisely with the spacing disc on the left, but can simply use the copy dog and a straight in push to control the depths using a key to be duplicated. Ilco knows nothing of this machine. The best I could find on a patent search is the one that originates two keys. I am now wondering whether this was originally a dual code cutter that was modified with an accessory copy dog either by Ilco or an ambitious locksmith.

They move parallel to the ground when actually cutting the key. We have it dedicated just for cutting Best keys.
