sargent & greenleaf 8077 combo reset problem

Postby 2k05gt » Fri May 25, 2012 11:38 am

I work for a Government dept. of ??; I took over a Classified Area and I noticed that a lock on a cabinet was not locked all the way. An employee told me that they lost the combo a while ago and just don’t click the lock closed all the way. We, I am a security professional and I need to fix this ASAP.
I downloaded the instructions to reset the combo. I have the Standard Change Key but no Reset Key.
after reading the instructions it looks like the Change key only works if you know the combo.
and I don’t. I have the Back plate removed; the shutter on the change key hole is open.

I tried to make a reset key but after 2 days I have not been able to reset the combo.
Any Tips? Ideas, anything… I need to get my cabinet closed again with an approved lock and not a two dollar Master key lock.

Honestly, call GSA and procure another lock saying this one's combo was lost before you started the job. why waste half a week of productive time when sensitive data goes unprotected. Is there not another 8077AD kicking around new in box somewhere at your office?

Also, please note we dont openly discuss combo locks of this nature out in the public forum. We only talk about it with trusted members in the Advanced forums.

If the door is open in the back of the padlock, you can try to use a pen light to view the gates, and then figure out the offset by looking at the patent drawings. That's all I can say, maybe someone else can offer more instruction.

Best of luck,

Thanks for the reply,
I called Sargent & Greenleaf and they directed me to a website that would sell me the Reset Key for $96.00 or I can send it to a company in Texas and they will reset the lock to factory #25 for $50.00.

I was able to get another lock today; I did not want the cabinet unsecure over the long weekend.
So as per the Government this Lock is “Trash” and no longer usable.

That being said, I am a Security Professional (CISSP) and understanding Security Devices is my Job.
So it is now becoming a personal quest to reset this thing, I have never had so much problems with any lock before.
The window is open, I have a change key but it’s useless without the combo. You need a reset key to reset the combo but it’s expensive. I figured out the gate hole is 25 digits off of the change hole so I will start there. Now it’s a Rubik Cube challenge.

I have a reset key, I can take pix and measurements if you want to try and copy it. You can't buy a reset key... already tried. I guess I got lucky, since I just found it in a box.

On the Reset key both ends of the key serve a function. One end is the Three-Wheel Locking/Unlocking Bar and can lock or unlock all three wheels simultaneously when completely inserted into the lock. The other end is the Single-Wheel Locking/Unlocking Bar and will only lock or unlock one wheel at a time. You will need both ends to successfully reset the lock.

Yeah you could do that. You can remove that tab on a change key to create the 3 wheel locking/unlocking end. For the single wheel locking/unlocking, remove the tab and then file all but the last 0.15" at the very end back to round.
