Plugs a-turning, but it aint a-opening!

Postby clunkclip » Tue Nov 25, 2003 11:52 pm

I've been practicing on an old KrookLock (steering wheel lock thing) of mine, since I thought that would have a moderatly good lock.

It appears to be a 5 wafer lock, and I can pick it in no time at all... however even though the plug rotates, the lock doesn't unlock?! Is there some sort of mechanism in there that only allows it to unlock when a key is in?

Thanks to anyone who can un-confuse me!
(and yes, im a newbie!)

If the plug rotates, it's unlocked. Try pulling the bars apart. (I'm assuming that's what they are.) If that doesn't work, pick it in the other direction and repeat. :)

HA HA! Sometimes my stupidity astounds me! You're right, I just needed to pull the arms hard, as they had corroded and were really stiff. What is it with my and corroded locks?!

I'm surprised that they use such a low-security lock on something like that though. I'd have expected at least a pin tumbler with some spool pins or something. I know these things are just low-cost deterents, but someone could pick it with 2 screwdrivers in about 20 seconds! Seems strange.

Steering wheel locks are meant to be a visual deterrant and inconvenience. The two things that most thieves don't like and are concerned about, so the locking mechanism sometimes becomes secondary.
