I can't take credit for the idea but I liked it so I made something to see if it was possible. There's lots of room for improvement and I built this for 6 bucks and some change. If anyone's interested in instructions I will post them later as I don't have enough time at the moment.

I would like to see others build something like this and improve on it.

Yes, please do post schematics (drawings, pictures ect) of the build, the device does look self explainatory and can prolly build it from scratch but, i'm curious of what you used.

Here's a breakdown. It's simple and self-explanatory. It's not the best-looking tool and there is tons of room for improvement, so someone improve it or build a better one and tell us how you made it.

I took a file and filed grooves for tension as you can see in the 4th photo. When I did this the key wanted to slide into the pipe so I took a hammer and beat in the sides a little.

I also clipped the end of the spring to make it easy to change keys.

Materials used:

3/4" x 3" Steel pipe nipple
3/8" x 3 1/2" Steel pipe nipple
7/16" x3 1/2" x .047 Spring
1 hex nut from my Garage

Ooh, good idea. Just watching the video I though it was somehow made from one of those spring-loaded toilet paper roll holders
So the holy grail is to get the tool to handle the timing of the twist too (preferably adjustable relative to the moment of strike)... There might be a way to do it with a design like this by milling a spiral into one of tubes... Hm.

Thanks for all the positive comments, especially you Shrub. You inspired me to get arsae in gear to make it. I also considered a gun type tool. I even wandered around toy stores looking at toy guns.

The problem with having a spiral or such like on the same shaft is that you then need to make the spring stronger to counter act the friction and also a set machined thing means it has to turn, what happens when it doesnt bump first time? the thing will jam up if your lucky ready to pull back out but if your not lucky the key will twist in the lock or the bow get damaged,

On previous ideas i have had a constant tension on the end, this is achieved by somthing rather like the circular tension tool style, this is adjustable with an external spring, this also means that by holding the tool once the lock is bumped you can swap the left for the right spring and simply let go of the tool to flip it,

The latest idea i did have but is still on the workbench is to have a gun (i tended to stick with the gun idea but maybe ill start thinking outside the box again a bit now) that once the trigger is pulled it starts a reaction as in it strikes the key but on its way down it hits a trigger inside that releases a tension in either direction (user settable) that is timed to happen once the key is struck,

The system is then reset on the release of the pulled trigger ready for the next pull,

It should be a shared congrats as far as i see, P1ckf1sh came up with the design and jimb made it, very well done for the both of you, we must remember where the idea came from for this particular tool in any future discussions and im being serious about it,

That thread and one other inspired me the make the tool. I don't recall exactly what was said, but something kinda got under my skin on the other thread. That was the inspiration.

Shrub, I didn't do this to gain a late entry into the contest, but thanks for the effort.

p1ckf1sh I had skimmed over your post and had forgotten it. If I had remembered it I would have saved a lot of time. You do deserve credit, I also think assweasel deserves credit since he started the thread. Without that thread and the other one I never would have attempted to make it. I've never been one to make tools.
