Trap pins, new idea?

Trap pins, new idea?

Postby FarmerFreak » 19 Dec 2009 11:58

To my knowledge of trap pins (which is very small by the way). They primarily use heavier springs to prevent you from lifting the pins back out of the trap.

This idea doesn't require much more space to implement. However it would be much more difficult to make, yet virtually impossible to get the pin to lift back out of the trap.

Anyone familiar with how a spring loaded pen cap works should easily know where the idea came from.
The concept is pretty simple. The pin goes down, rotates a little bit, then simply won't go back up. Just like a pen.

The hardest part to make would be the cut inside the chamber.

thats pretty cool lol
it would be a tough cut to make...

yona made a trap pin idea i think should be reposted if he sees this.
it had pins that shoot into the side of the trap pins locking them in place.

imagind a spool pin that after falling into the "trapped" position another pin is pushing into the slot of the spool.

does that make sence at all...

I did save the pictures he put up cause I liked the idea so much... but my computer in my room died(wont get online... or let me see the start bar...) so Ill put them on a usb drive and upload em for you all to see.

Yeah, I thought of that too. But a lot of locks don't have the room to do that on. (euro/profile cylinders)

But yes, on a mortise cylinder the trap pin for the trap pin would be an easy way to do it :!:

Would it not be easier to make the relocker pin really thin, so it bends when pushed sideways? That's more than enough to ensure it never gets pushed back up by a pick, and the plug cannot be turned.

Another way would be to simply put the pin into a new hole in the plug, so it cannot be reached via the keyhole once turned. Think what would happen if you drilled right through the plug at 30 degrees to the rest of the chambers. With the key in there, the extra check pin would be fine. Without that, it would be fired right through the plug, locking it solid. Even if you managed to lift the top pin back up, the lower part would still be trapped in the bottom of the plug and into the hull, effectively destroying any future use of the lock. This would also add another "shearline" (No, it's not really a shearline, but you get my point) that would have to be drilled.

The concern I would have with a pin that bends is that it would be weak. You could possibly force it back and forth until they all break, and then turn the lock.

I imagine you are talking about something like this.

But the idea got me thinking about something like this.

This is probably closer to what you had in mind.
I like it. :)

Then you lost me somewhere in the second paragraph. I keep thinking that if you drilled all the way through the plug. You would need some way of preventing it from locking up on the opposite side that it is suppose to. At the moment I can't imagine a good way of doing that.
