smallest picks?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

smallest picks?

Postby savs2k » 3 Oct 2008 17:34

im curious what are the smallest lock pick sets that you guys can use well? After i get better i might decide to carry some picks on me instead of in the car but my pockets are always full! A few picks arent that much to carry but there not that small either. I usually have my wallet in my front pocket a knife clipped onto the same one. keys in my other front pocket(theres about 5 car keys on there and 4 house) a pack of cigerettes in that one too. i even use a cell phone pouch because my pockets are not big enough. Are picks that fit in your wallet work decently? I was considering a jackknife style one to carry or the slidding credit card to minimize extra baggage. Pictures would be nice if you guys could

I carry a SouthOrd short-hook, an HPC short-hook and a veriety of tension wrenches in the small SouthOrd case in my front pocket. I'vbe never had any problems with space.

im considering the FPS-7P Composite Handle from lockpicktools.com do you think this is a decent one to carry around? Also what other picks should i order with it to swap in/out?

Most people on here will tell you not to trust a jackknife set any farther than you can throw it but I can vouch for the FPS line being a quality pickset. The way that the tool locks down the picks is excellent, and really makes the pick feel like it is one piece with the body of the tool. In my personal experience, pick feedback is about as good as using a true one-piece pick (for reference, my other primary pickset is the HPC Novice). The mechanics of the FPS are much better than the screw mechanism of the Southord set, which by all accounts comes loose far too quickly and makes it easy to lose the set screw. On top of that, the FPS comes with two tension tools compared to the Southord's one.

Anyway, a jackknife set is never a real replacement for a proper pickset, but IMO the FPS jackknife is the closest that anyone's come yet. I don't mean to come off sounding like an ad or anything, but I really am impressed with how usable the pickset is, and how closely it approximates the feel of a real pick. Just my opinion.

The lockpicktools.com jack knife isn't bad. But I do better with normal picks. You could cut the handles of normal metal picks shorter if you want smaller picks.

my picks are all home made but my "full sized" longest pick is about 2.5 in. (i think. its shorter than my index finger) and is hacksaw-width. thats really not all that big...but its really shiny :D

Great suggestion: the easiest idea is always the best solution! 8)

Anyone got any photos of super small picks? I'm trying to do the same thing, build a small pocket set that is. I found a nice little Sony Memory card case, the LCH-MA. It's 4 1/4" x 17/32" x 2 3/4". It's sturdy enough, small enough, pretty enough and doggone it, people like it. Image blatantly "borrowed".

I agree. The FPS-7 is worth checking out.

HPC's KGB set or their bifold or trifold wallet set would serve you well.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

the only thing with wallet picks are i stopped using a traditional folding one. I started using one that does not flip open. Has a money clip on one side and a new pockets for credit cards so i can leave it in my front pocket to not get picked. So the jackknife would be better for me except i already carry a knife so depending how big the jack knife is i can clip it in the back pocket and hopefully it doesnt bother me
