If you dont want to hold it upside down, i think the only comfty way to do it is to make a tension tool that works for you.
I did see some pics of some spiral ones that looked like they might work.

i have the same problem..i use the side of my thumb. the only problem i have with it is feedback. when picking spooled pins i have a hard time figuring out if they are spooled. i clamped one in a desk drawer the other day. plenty of creative ways to clamp one instead of using a vise. i am currently figuring out how to hold a peterson prybar.https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CSVO8_AWoAEdVDO.jpg regular tension wrench

With the peterson, why don't you tension with your index finger instead of your thumb? FYI, if you don't already know, that padlock probably has serrated in it.

if find it hard to tension clockwise with my index finger on my right hand.. granted i have not really given it a fair shot yet. have not really tried to pick this american lock yet. it does have serrated pins it was more of a pic for the original poster to see how i hold and pick most of my locks

Don't they say that since the right side of the body uses the left side of the brain, and the left side of the body uses the right side of the brain, that Left handed people are the only ones in their right mind? 8)
