What Kind Of Lock Is This?? (Pictures)

Postby elistian » 18 Feb 2006 22:03

Ok im fairly new to lock picking, I have read several ebooks including the MIT Guide, and watched probably around 6 hours of footage on lock picking. I just bought myself a set a lock picks from lockpicks.com to.

Anyways ive read a bunch of different ebooks on all different kinds of locks and im just wondering if anyone can tell me what kind of lock this is. This is my front door lock and im just woundering if anyone knows what kind it is, maybe a Kwickset or Schlage, im not sure. If it helps im located in Ontario, Canada. Im actually not even sure what lock brands they sell around here yet.

Anyways if anyone can help me out let me know. If this help, right on the front of the dead-bolt lock it says "Pro Set".

Heres Some Pictures

Well with the pictures you posted it is kinda hard to say. In one of them i can make out set so I imagine that they are kwikset locks. If they are in fact kwikset they should be farily easy to pick.

Does the keys you got with the lock look like number 1 or 2

Well now i can see that you said they say pro set so that is why i see set lol.

With a off brand like that i would say kwikset but you never know.

Another way would be look at the keys that came with it do they say KW1 or SC1 on them anywhere.

KW1 would be kwikset
SC1 would be Schlage

The finish and overall looks of the lock appeared to be mountain security to me. It will be a kwikset kw1 keyway if it is mountain security. It is hard to tell from the pictures, but I am 99% sure whatever make it is that it is a kw1 kwikset keyway.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

ok thanks for the input.. the reason i wanted to know it because i dont have the original keys that came with it...

just curious though if its a "mountain security" how can it be a "kwikset"?? or is "kwikset" one of those big companies that makes locks for all the little companies that re-brand the locks?? like can you actually go out to the store and buy a lock that says "kwikset" on the packaging as the main brand??

thanks for any help, and keep in mind up until a week ago i knew absolutly nothing about locks or lock picking so bare with me, ive never had to buy a lock in my life, well other then a bike lock..

Ok I just looked at a key for the lock and on the key it says Klassen WR3.

Anyone know what kind of lock it is now?? Would Klassen be the maker of the lock to?

Well WR3 should be a weiser keyway which means the lock is a weiser lock. I saw this on some website: (KW1 also generally fits: WK2, AR1, WR3(which should be your keyway), WR5 & DE6 Keyways,
some of the more popular on the East Coast.)

So More an likely it should be a KW1 key.

Look at the hole where the key goes (the Keyway) and see if it resembles this:

pro-set is just a sorta cheap knock off brand of weiser locks.

elistian:as the previous posters mentioned, it a ppears to be a standard pin tumbler lock. It shouldnt be too hard to open, unless its dirty(even then it would most likely be fairly simple) I would expect its a knockoff of a weiser or kwickset lock. I would suggest getting a new lock to work on for the time being however becasue it is never a good idea to pick a lock regularly that you depend on. Its pretty hard to mess up a lock like this if you are careful, but it could wear out faster, and its always nice to beable to watch tv while picking

Kwikset is indeed a brand of lock. Many clone locks use the KW1 keyblank, and there's a 90% chance that's what yours will take. The difference between KW1 and WR5 is that the wards on a KW1 are wider even though it has the same general shape as a WR5. This is what allows a KW1 to fit in a Weiser, but not the other way around.
