MASTER 140

Postby Flipper » 20 Nov 2008 7:43

Sure you have've been goin thru this so many times at least on the forum. I'd like to know why somone says master 140 has 4 pins if mine has 5. More, mine has a black plastic case around it and I could not find many of those either here or on yt. Could you clear it up please?
Secondly, could you give me some GOOD suggestions to pick it? I know it has spools or serrated pins. I got it picked it once two days ago but no more. It seems difficult to me to feel the counterrotation. Why? I'm getting mad at this. pls help me!! Thank you soo much :)

Are you sure it's a 140 ??

I bought a new one last week, no plastic case but it has 4 pins, one of which I believe is a spool..
How old is yours ??

Personnally I use a slightly curved half diamond and it worked good for me so far.. but it's the only pick I have so maybe a small hook would work better..

First thing that come to my mind if you have a hard time feeling the counterrotation is that you may be putting too much tension.. When I pick mine I usually set all the pins then release some tension, find the "security pin" and while pushing it upward I almost let go all remaining tension untill it gets to the sheer line..

It probably isn't the best method but it seems to work good on this particular lock..
Hope it helps you a bit..

Nerther is right; here is a Master 140:

(with apologies to John King. Hope he doesn't mind!)

It's a little all brass number, with two spool pins and two regular. What you have might be a 142:

But there aren't too many Master brand locks with 5 pins. Can you post a picture?

Try Auto Zone, I was there today and they had 140's on the end cap when you walk past the headlights and light bulbs.

I got all of my 140s at Ace Hardware. They had a bunch, and I got them at the store closing auction for the local one. Good deals.

Just a quick update. I finally got the hang of it. I paid attention to my tension and some other stuff and, well, I can definitely pick it whenever I want. Thank you all!!
