Schlage Lock Repinning Question (from Newbie)

Postby marlowe » 11 Jun 2009 21:54

Hey everybody, been lurking for a while, and finally took the plunge with a SouthOrd pretty basic set (11 picks, 4 tension tools), and I went out today to purchase my first practice lock.

I got a Schlage, as recommended by Digital Blue's guide, but I am running into a problem that I'm sure is both basic and silly, but nonetheless stumps me.

He directs to Illusion's guide to re-pinning a lock, and Illusion's first step is to remove a small metal ring around the lock, and then to "push out" the cylinder. I am entirely unable to find this little metal ring and, beyond that, am unsure how I would go about removing the cylinder anyways. I'm also somewhat afraid I may have bought the wrong kind of lock. I just picked a cheaper, keyed on one side, Schlage deadbolt. A picture of the full thing in package is below.

I pulled out this piece

Because I figured it was the only section I needed (i didnt see either the deadbolt attachment or the inside latch/switch in Illusion's tutorial) Here is the backside of this piece (a couple pictures below; I'm not sure what area I should be focusing on)

Essentially, I was looking for some help with what I am missing. Is the metal piece here? The body and rear of my lock look much different from those in the tutorial, and I was also wondering if I even picked the right kind of lock, or if I should just return it and buy a "replacement cylinder" instead.

Or, if I need more parts of the lock than I've been using, or something similarly obvious. I really appreciate any help anyone can give me as to how to pop out the cylinder and begin training one pin at a time, as I'm completely stumped.

Thanks in advance.

The lock you picked is a good one. And yes you can rekey it. It should also have 4 spooled driver pins in it, but this should be less of an issue if you are planning on taking pins out for practice.

Anyway, a quick internet search and I came up with these directions. http://consumer.schlage.com/installatio ... Manual.pdf

You will need to scroll down to the Schlage B300 Maximum section. These should be the directions you are looking for.

I hope this helps. Have fun picking.

That screw there, take it off and the cylinder will come out. You should be able to take off the bolt works after that and have just the cylinder, plug, and cam attached. The "metal ring" is the cam, and is probably help in by a small pin that you can press down to unscrew it.

Good luck!

thank you guys so much for the swift and informative help. I just pulled out the cylinder. Not to be hopelessly needy, but in the interest of not breaking my beautiful new lock, I figured I should ask, rather than regret. I am now down to this piece

And I don't know how to pull the long metal slide (the manual linked early in this thread calls it the Tail) out. I was considering yanking off the textured metal ring cover that seems to be securing it (the cam, perhaps?) but yanking anything so delicate hurts me in deep and terrifying ways.

I also pulled off this piece, identified as the Retainer and Crank, which was attached to the Tail (or what I identified as the Tail.) I hope I was supposed to do that.

Sorry to be the most cliche of newbs, but I don't have spare cash to pick up another lock, and I think I have now moved beyond returning this one. Thanks in advance for any info on separating this last bit. I really appreciate it.

Look on page 24.

The little ring is threaded. There is a little spring pin that you can press in on with a pick tip and then unscrew it by hand. The little pin will fall out and the spring too.

When you take the plug out, I recommend you put the whole thing inside a big ziplock bag so that if parts go flying, you won't lose them.

just wanted to pop back and say thanks an absolute ton to everyone for the help. Got it all stripped down and working -- I also went back and picked up a Kwikset (much, much cheaper) to practice on too, so I don't break an expensive lock. I can do a slow build of skills too.

Anyways, thanks a ton.
