Guard Security 40mm

Postby pickwicket » 19 Jan 2010 19:02

Hello all.

I'm a beginner to lockpicking (opened my first lock about a month ago), and have just upgraded from the old paperclip method to a small set of SouthOrd picks. So far all of my locks (Master #1, 3, and 5) have been cake. Half way through my paperclip days I acquired a little Guard Security 40mm padlock from a friend of mine. Having never heard of the brand before, I quickly assumed that the lock was "A cheap Chinese piece of garbage" and jumped in.

Half an hour and several paperclips in to my attempt I came to the realization that it was not going to open that night. Shortly after that, I received my first real picks, and immediately jumped in to the little hardened steel headache once again, to no avail. Since then, I've picked it once, completely by chance.

Google searches of the lock, or even the brand, have proven largely unsuccessful. My question to the fine folks at Lock Piking 101 is this: Has anyone encountered this lock, and if so, can you provide any insight, or even better a link to some sort of diagram?

You could always disassemble the lock and see what you're dealing with. Perhaps there are spool pins or, conversely, really loose and crappy tolerances.

i've seen two guard 40mm padlocks gutted. one had 3 spool pins and the other had four. they were just the standard guards though and didn't say security on them. probably no difference though. from what i've seen they appear to open easiest using a rake and jiggling method.
