Security Pins

Postby dauce » Mon Jul 23, 2012 11:15 pm

Hello all!

After recieving the basic (~$16) 5-piece pick kit in the mail about 2 weeks ago I have successfully picked a Masterlock #3, a First Security lock, and my front door deadbolt lock and main key lock. I'm pretty excited about that.

Now I have a Brinks padlock and a Security Guard (Dollar store) that apparently has spool pins in them. I just ordered a practice lock from another site which should be helpful, but in the meantime:

1. In your opinion, how steep is the learning curve for these 'pick-resistant' locks?

2. The only strategy I've come across is where you use lots of tension, and push all pins above the shear point, and slowly let them down to unlock it. No luck yet for me with this. Does anyone have any other advice? I have searched, but to no avail.

Thank you in advance!

Some are painful for me others are easy..... Ok first my experience which is limited.

Light tension set all pins, and go back and reset pins. use SUPER light tension. Might help.

im having a hard time working with some sec pins ive pinned my locks with recently. im running just 3 pins per lock lock one has 2 spool/one normal lock2 has the same but with serrated key/driver in 2 of three chambers. when i do open these locks it takes awile and im definately going really light on the tension. thats all i've got so far and i know it mirrors what mark just said, but i wanted to second him. i see they're gonna take some work to master.

Get a lock that you can pull some pins out and get a feel of what picking them is like. When I first was learning, this was the best piece of information I received. I was able to pick spools before, but had trouble identifying if they were there. Once I got an idea for sure how a spool pin felt, I now instantly know when one is there.

Good luck!

Thanks all,

I recently purchased a practice lock where I can re-pin it with security pins. That should help.
