Great places to get locks

Postby Steve24 » 19 Jun 2008 12:01

i couldnt find anywhere that addresses this so i thought id start one.

a couple weeks ago i went to habitat for humanity, they are a donation center that takes household building type products sorts them and resells them. I'm sure there are similar organizations depending on where you live, but i went there and bought around 20 deadbolt locks for under 7 dollars. they sell for really cheap when keys are missing or the actual bolt is gone which i really don't mind at all.

thats the best place i know to get locks, i hate going to home depot and buying one lock for 17 dollars or so. habitat for humanity dosent have that wide a selection of padlocks but there just rolling in incomplete deadbolt sets!

I went to an Australian equivalent near me a while ago, The Salvation Army, and I couldn't find a thing, not even a padlock.

Which sucked, the closest thing they had was a metal handle for sliding doors, so that wasn't any help.

Thanks anyway, maybe it's different over there.

Yeah - went to a great hardware reclamation place when I was in Austin. The one I went to here in MA was awful though, near off-the-shelf prices for used locks.

Steve24, thanks for the awesome advice! I went to Habit for Humanity and increased my deadbolt cylinder collection for next to nothing. I get so tired of repinning familiar locks for practice, only to have them pick in a near identical order. Don't think this problem will be bothering me so much anymore. I'm thrilled.

The junkyard can be a great place to get locks if you can get an in who won't charge you full price for locks without keys. I got this idea from Steve0527 on his post here:

Well I'm glad i could help Tooly! I need to go replenish my supply to, I've just about picked the ones i have to dust!

And Sorry for sending you other guys on a wild goose chase, hope you have better luck somewhere else! That junkyard sounds like a great idea though! I'll have to give that a try!

WOW, great tip. There's a ReStore right in my smallish town that I didn't even know about, just in time for all the house and garden projects my slavemaster^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hwife is convincing me to do this summer.

So I just want to the Columbus Restore. Wild place. There were 10,000 teenagers there collecting materials for their volunteer projects (remember, it's HfH) and it was funny. 5 teenyboppers trying to carry a steel reinforced door and put it in the pickup of their group leader.

Anyway, there were probably 400 new and 600 used locks there - if you are trying to make a lock library (which I am) then it is a gold mine. I got a US Lock, a Schlage, a Weslock and a no-name for $3, all without keys but in good shape. New Schlage deadlocks are $7.50. TONS of the locks are KIKs which don't interest me as much 'cause they are hard to repin.

If you are looking for exotic locks, though, you are probably out of luck. These are all reclimations from demolished or rebuilt homes, and I didn't find a single not-cheap lock. If you are of the flea market mindset and you don't mind risking tetnus, then you could probably go twick a month and dig through and find the occasional gem. One thing I didn't look for it padlocks, which they probably have a few of.

All in all, recommended if you are building a collection for beginners or just getting started, or just like to have lots and lots of locks around.

Major score at the Springfield, Massachusetts ReStore!

The woman did tell me that they are not affiliated with the other Restores around America.

Here's what I picked up.

Major score might be understated. The best I have done is a used Schlage Primus and a gently used kwikset smartkey. At a dollar apiece it was a major score. You won the thrift store lottery.
