BEST 7-pin

Postby 89ls1 » 19 Mar 2009 23:50

Any one have any luck with these? 7-pin core WA keyway. I just got mine and have been playing with it for about an hour but have yet to pick it. I am using a large hook pick, but it is a little tight with the keyways shape.. Thinking of making a custom longer hook than the SouthOrd hook I have now.

Mainly just curious what others think of this core/lock.

I don't have any hands-on experience with the Best W-series keyways, but that is a mean-looking warding on that keyway. Insofar as tools to approach that core with, you might want to look into the modification that op-sec did to his short hook pick for working on his Keymark cylinder.

I don't seem to be having much luck searching for his post on it, but here's a youtube of him picking it:

Outside of that, you might want to investigate ultra-slim picks like the Peterson slender gem / slender reach tools.

I've never been fortunate enough to pick a W keyway. I've picked the majority of the best alphabet, except for Q, some of the T's, and all of the W's. I think this one is an S, but it's hard to tell sometimes without actually trying a key in it. Image

This is one of the posts that Engineer mentioned, where johnopsec talks about using a small GOSO pick to get around in the keyway of a Keymark SFIC. http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?p=319456#p319456

Making the tools you have work for you is important, but for a tough keyway making or modifying tools to fit better definately has it's place and it is a cool feeling to defeat a lock with tools you made. Anyway, it's a great looking core. Mean keyway, but if you get a hook that helps you find more room to work, then it should just be a matter of time.

Toolys photo may not be one of the W keyway, but it does show a core that has been picked to the core removal function, notice that at the left of the photo, the curve of the core covers the curve of its housing inside the lock, indicating that the core is partially out.

most SFIC keyways are kind of mean. try to stick to Euro/slimline picks. I like my Rytans(Cheap as they may be  ), but I'm sure any will work. Are you trying to pick the Control bar or are just trying to pick it ?

wow! "W" is for wonky wardings!
setting that 7th pin must be tricky, especially if you have deep cuts preceding it .
i wish you the â„¢Best of luck =)
going for Ctrl on a six pinner myself at the moment.
