Schlage Anti Pick Shield?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Schlage Anti Pick Shield?

Postby edubba » 4 May 2010 13:01

I'm moving into a new home soon and want to either re-key or replace the locks after moving in. The locks that are currently installed are just a regular Schlage deadbolt and doorknob (the horizontal lever style).

I was at Home Depot the other day and saw some "Grade 1" Schlage locks with something called an "anti pick shield". Are these any good or is that just some marketing garbage?

I'd like something that will be at least somewhat pick resistant without breaking the bank like an Abloy or Bilock and am hoping that these might do the trick. There's an alarm at the home so at least that will help deter people too.

Thanks guys!

I KNEW when I saw that on the new Schlage Securekey packaging that normal Joe Citizen home owners would immediately think it has to do with being pick proof or more lock pick resistant.

The Schlage anti pick shield is nothing new, and it is meant to stop an ICE PICK attack. The attack itself is somewhat destructive in nature where you have to use an ice pick to punch a hole in the wooden door and then retract the deadbolt using the tip of the ice pick. I won't get into the exact spot on the door where one would have to do this, but the point of the pick shield is to stop the ice pick after it punches through the wooden door, and into the area where the lock's deadbolt and the lock cylinder assembly meet.

The new Schlage Securekey which is the model that has the pick shield uses a differnet mechanism than normal Schlage locks and is someone more difficult to pick but it is pickable. You can tell them by a + Plus sign stamped on the face of the lock where the key goes in.

If you go to a real locksmith shop, not a Home Depot or Lowe's, you can buy a Schlage and it will have the pick shield. They've had them for years, so has Medeco, ASSA, Abloy, etc.

I don't know this person, but here's a nice write up which explains a lot about quality and the types of parts used in retail store deadbolts vs. real locksmith shop quality deadbolts. http://www.weasel.com/house_locks.html

Thanks for your question,

HA! I knew it had to be something funky like that. When someone puts the word "pick" together with a lock, the image most people are going to get is some blackhat picking a lock to gain entry. Funny that they don't clarify this on the packaging.

Thanks for clearing that up!

I didn't see any of the Securekey models there. They only had the regular Schlage locks and the ones with the keypad for keyless entry, which are really expensive (might as well get an Abloy or Bilock at the price of those).

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll just contact a local locksmith after moving in. Is there a good insider's way to find a reputable one besides searching yelp.com?

Well ...that just makes me want an Abloy even more! Too bad that's not really in the budget, though.

Is there any sort of happy medium between these? Maybe something not quite as robust as a high security lock but not as lousy as the Schlage or Kwikset?

In case anyone ever wonders why I hate marketers so much and wish they would all get terminal diseases, this would be Exhibit A.
