DIY security pins!

Postby BSG_314159 » 12 Apr 2015 22:26

So I know these things are not perfect but I love making my own stuff.

So after repinning my new 5200s with security pins I was going to just throw the old pins away... thank goodness I didnot. After searching the interwebs I could not find mushroom pins for masterlock and american padlocks. Just the spool pins and serrated pins we all know that come in them.

So I decided to make my own mushroom pins with some files standard pins and a cordless drill.

Step 1:

Get yourself a dull pin... driver or key pin works.
Image

Step 2:

Very carefully insert the pin of your choice into the cordless drill.
Image

Step 3:

Get a tool that will shave off some metal. I have a collection of hand files that have all sorts of shapes. My weapon of choice was the half sphere like shape because it creates that mushroom cut.
Image

Step 4:

Go at it. I probably messed one or two before getting a couple to my liking. The fun part is you creat your mushroom... does not have to be perfect and I will test them out tomorrow to see how they pick :)

Before and after

I will like to call this a cross bread spool mushroom. It does have a slope even tho its not to noticeable in the picture.
Image

The best part is you control the level of security!! Every mushroom pin and every serrated pin will be unique and a challenge.

I will use a Dremel in lieu of the cordless drill tool next weekend to see how those results.

That's not a bad idea. They DO look a little different from mushrooms.

Well done man. It's interesting to see the creative minds here discovering or working on similar projects over the years. Your post reminded me of the time Raymond posted very similar photos, great minds think alike!

It would be interesting to design an automated spool/mushroom/serrated making machine, where you dump a bunch of pins in, and then go down a line and get a little work done and spit out the other end. Wonder how LAB makes theirs.

Thanks!! Holy crap and here I thought Invented the wheel! I didn't even bother to search this forum for ideas before starting. :D His post did look like mine... except his was a little better haha. I just took pictures of the first things I created.... My wife only lets me fiddle with my locksmithing hobby for so long.

A machine would be pretty awesome for making the process automated but something about doing things by hand. When I make my picks I don't use any power tools at all. It would be pretty hard to make a security pin without a drill but if the process was automated it would take away from the custom/one of a kind security pin. Pickers will never be able to get comfortable with a security pin because not 2 are alike.

My goal with this was to first off make mushroom pins for my American locks and second to make curve balls in the game to throw me off. I will install 1 or 2 custom security pins into my 5200s progressively getting more complex.

I literally sit in my garage and come up with ideas on creating locksmith tools. Some awesome... some not so good. Experimenting with different types of metal and how they effect the feedback.

I had done something similar just last week with some very old HPC Yale .115" pins as an experiment. I have definitely wound up with some, lets say "unusual" shapes. I haven't tested most of them because I was trying for proper spool and serrated function but your 'Lulu' has me rethinking the utility of the ones I didn't completely mangle.

Still nice work, and it is always interesting to see what comes out of all of the 'parallel' innovation in this community.

Think about it for a second. A person may practice for a while on spools and them on mushrooms. This one will stump them because it does not act the same. Maybe I will use the lulu for the key pins and make some unique double mushroom pins for the driver pins :) talk about a brutal lock to pick at!!! I can see it now the American lock with 3 lulu key pins. 3 mushroom drivers and the rest serrated. Mwahahah!

heh.. heheh...

Lulu is catching on.

Let it be known that on that on 13 April 2015, BSG_314159 created a new pin shape, and Comrade627 dubbed it the "Lulu pin".

I just made a couple Lulu type drivers and mixed them in with some more traditional spools and mushrooms in an old Yale 6-pin cylinder, they are pretty nasty as long as the edge of the shelf is properly sharply angled. It took me significantly longer to pick than it did when I was mixing spools and serrated pins.

The long straight edge also seems to keep the plug sufficiently centered that I can insert the key without significant jamming like you get if you have nothing but spools and apply rotation as you insert the key but that might just be a peculiarity of my current pinning and this lock.

I just thought of a modification, Brandon.

How's about, make a standard Lulu but move the cut up towards the top of the pin a smidge, and put a bumpstop style cut on the lip of the bottom. Should give an extra false set to argue with.

Are these the pins you made last week or made some new ones based on my design?

Awesome regardless. Nice to know they work!!
