advertising

hi guys,
i am toying with the idea of this time round putting an extra ad in my local yellow pages, but now i am thinking would it be better for me to put a separate ad in another yellow pages to cover more people or just concetrate on doubling up in my local one, what do you think?
thanx

I reckon go for a nice big professional ad, and in the same
book, a small, modest ad.

You will be targeting the maximum audience in the one area,
increasing your business and decreasing your fuel costs, travel time, etc.

By 'maximum audience' I mean the people who only call big, well known
and professional looking companies as one audience

...and people who disregard the big guys and give the small businesses
most of their business.

This is not any expert opinion, just an opinion.

Also, assuming the theory to get more business this way works,
The big expensive ad will be justified by fuel savings, etc.

Unless I am way out of my league here? :?

Which ad do you do ? big or small ? or both ?

What customer will ring a big ad ? what customer will ring a small ad ?

I mean, write a big ad and write a small ad.

Some people only call big ads, some only call small ads, some don't
care how big or small the ad is.

My point is that either way, if you have a big ad and a small ad, you
will monopolise the market of people who may have not called your
business only because they don't call 'dodgy-looking' small ads or
'corporate monster' big ads.

This way, if looks did matter, you would have two times the chance of
anyone else in the book, of being rung.

I hope that makes sense :?

Good point, thats what I have done this year, one big and one small.

Any advice on this question..

On some adverts they have many different numbers covering different areas but each number we know goes to the one number, do you think that works.

If it is a toll free bush number, that is fine.

Otherwise it frustrates the crap out of me and if you have ever looked at
a porn site on the internet, you'll understand what I mean :P
....A billion links, all advertising different things, but essentially, just
another door to the same sh*tty site you just left.

..Seriously though, I think the company that has a secretary in six different
offices taking calls occassionally during the day would benefit from hiring just
one secretary to take calls for the whole day as her job.

For the customer, this is ridiculous as a little bit of local knowledge goes
a long way.

Nearly every time I need to ring somebody, I have to talk to some
brick wall 5000km away, because that is where the main office is.

...But they are no help, because I need to speak to somebody local.

Next time you are on the phone to some idiot across four borders, ask
yourself,
"Would it have helped them to see what I am talking about
if they only knew the locally famous thing that I was talking about?.....
....Would she then, have seen why I was calling and not treated my
call as insignificant, an unimportant interruption to her cigarette break?"

....."To sPEak WITH aN acTuAL PERson, PUSH!! 39983, foLLOWeD By THe #"

Summary: They work, but they suck.

I thought YP didnt allow multiple advertising??!!
Yeah go for the really big ad Ray then you can ensure youre on about page 6 and stick another small one in too and that might make page 8!
Sorry to be cynical here mate but once bitten twice shy. I can guarantee you that Reactfast,Able,keytech/absolute emergencies etc will all having a better placement than the kikes of us. I do have a mate whos co is called Able Maintenance and he always puts a small 3 or 4 line ad in and usually tends to squeeze in on the first couple of pages,im thinking of just doing this next year.I would maybe go with your suggestion of doing a small ad in different books but get yourself a pnone number thats local to the book(and preferably an address aswell) Its a shame but unless you are seriously wedged up you just cant compete with the RF/AE cowboys where the yp are concerned.
Im biased on this because i hate YP and rf/ae with a passion! I wish you every success with it Ray but be careful where you put yourcash.

Ive not even bothered with yp this year due to a lot of the reasons acl has mentioned. They dont give a hoot about you and will sayanything to get your business. I tried thompsons this year with a nice big ad costing £200 a month and had 1 call so avoid that too. Im getting the work in though but through other forms of advertising but i wont be mentioning it on here as i know my competitors read this forum

Well, you're hit rate with the Thompson is better than mine with the BT book Toomush. Not a small ad, the book came out in March/April, and I've not had a single job from it! It's even worse than 118 247!

You live and learn...

Evo you need to make sure 118 24-7 has your listing sorted. I rang up as a customer a few times asking for my company by name to see what happened. After being told "that company doesnt appear to be on our database sir" i went mad and got some superviser bod on the phone asking for explainations. This happened twice then they got it sorted and now it gets me a job about every 2 weeks. Ok its not a lot but mostly they are late night jobs on the top rates so i stick with it for this reason alone. Word of mouth really is the way through fair pricing, after all its better the £50 you see rather than the £80 you dont see, if you get my drift. I have to say ive gained more work from being honest and not stitching up the customer, most want to take a few business cards for their friends if they are happy.

I agree with acl especially when yp say other locksmiths are having good results from 118247 when iv had one in six months.

For this year yp told me locksmiths come in the gold section so no discounts can be given.

They said my ad will be on page one as my company name begins with A, I said to the salesman can I have that in writing he say but I cant guarantee it.

Watch choice have we?

They more or less hold the monopoly of the advertising world and money talks. :?
