Hello, I've been lurking for a few months now and after todays fiasco thought I would register so I could share it with you all.

I decided to go to the store, and absentmindedly left my apartment without grabbing my keys. I shut the door and immediately realized I had just locked myself out of my apartment. *sigh* I went to the managers apartment however he was not home. He has a day job and would probably be out for a few hours. I didn't want to walk out the front door of the complex to finish my buisness, so I was effectively stuck. I wandered back to my apartment but on the way back something caught my eye, one of thoes large 2mm thick bobby pins. It looked sturdy enough I thought, I'll give it a try. I bent the pin straight and bent it into an 'L' shape, then a quarter inch from the bend began to bend it back and forth to break off a 'pick' I worked at it and after a few minutes I had a satisfactory tension wrench and a makeshift pick

I went to work on the lock

I couldn't feel the pins very well but after a few minutes I felt the pins set (!)

I opened the door, grabbed my keys, and went straight to the store to pick up some more of thoes pins.

Ironically named "SO SECURE"

they now fit nicely in my wallet.

nice story, good ending. So are you now concerned over the security of your front door lock? Once you pick your own door, it's kind of scary knowing how easily it can be done.

Well done! Who says you can't pick a lock with a bobby pin?!

Just like in the movies! Every man sould carry one

i too have used bobby pins to pick. not in such a desperate situation, however- it DOES work, and if a cop catches you with a couple b-pins it doesnt seem suspicious. what any one should try if they do use these as "carry with you picks" is the below handle method, it doesnt work as an excuse if caught, however, it works better i think.

it works quite well for me.

Yeah actually I thought about that. Im not too concerned however, if someone wants to get in, they would more likely kick in the door.

Yeah, larger than normal Bobby Pins. You should have no problem finding them at a drug store or Hair supply place.

I've been picking locks as a hobby for about 2 years. Never had to open a lock for real though. I was discouraged for awhile because I was having a really hard time with the nessassary pressure on the tension wrench. I was walking home one day and noticed a street sweeper. I followed him for a few blocks and got 5-6 good bristles and made myself a great tension wrench which dramatically improved my sucesses. I would suggest this to *anyone* having problems. I know it turned me back onto picking. The 90 degree bend really helps to apply the perfect tension.

I made this one without any heat as I was having a difficult time applying the perfect heat and re-applying heat to harden it. Its a great wrench but some locks (especially older ones) can have grimy plugs that require alot of torque to turn and the wrench will start to bend a little turning it. I keep a thicker wrench from "Magestic" around to help with difficult plugs.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. When that lock popped my heart skipped a beat! I didn't expect much as the bobby pin I was picking the pins with was totally straight but to my supprise it opened pretty quickly.

Jason.

We tell people to pick locks that they don't rely on, and yet you talk about picking your garage POS wafer lock like you're a god. I'd be greatly endebted if you could refrain from boasting about it here since it kind of defeats our entire system whereby we pick ethicaly.

I am getting pissed off with the crap you are posting on this site, and I've tollerated it, and actualy tried to be nice, but now I can't take it anymore.

Perhaps if you spent less time posting horsehite and picking you'd be a picking god by now.

No I'm not being reasonable.

Yes I am annoyed.

No I am not going to be nice unless you make an effort.

urghghhhh.... I tried to be nice... but it's not working... and I'm just annoyed tonight... I give up... :(
